About this Item: Chatto & Windus, London, 1924. Both new editions, re-set. Author's presentation copies, the first inscribed on verso of front free endpaper: "Read this from Pope, dear Jeremy [Hutchinson] `Honour and shame from no Condition rise; Act well your part, there all the honour lies' [six further lines, from An Essay on Man] Your aff[ection]ate cousin The Author." With his parents' presentation inscription on his 15th. birthday to the recto. Spine somewhat browned and frayed at head, light marking and soiling to boards - a very good copy. The second with a quotation from Vauvenargues, protg of Voltaire, to the second blank: "On ne peut avoir l'ame grande ou l'sprit un peut pntrant, sans quelque passion pour les letters," says Vauvenargues, and L.S. agrees with him." With the recipient's ownership signature in full to the front free endpaper, dated on his 15th birthday. The precociously well-read Hutchinson (both volumes have been opened) went on to become (like his father St.John) one of the finest silks in the land defending variously Lady Chatterley, Fanny Hill, Christine Keeler - the latter in the flesh - and The Romans in Britain. His mother - the writer Mary Hutchinson - was, variously, the mistress of Clive Bell, Aldous Huxley (and his wife Maria, simultaneously), Vita Sackville-West (needless to say) and possibly Virginia Woolf (for whom she apparently provided the basis of the character of Mrs. Dalloway. Her father, Hugh Barnes, married Winifred Strachey - Lytton's first cousin - hence the family connection. Spine label browned boards a little rubbed at extremities but a very good copy. About this Item: Chatto & Windus, London, 1922. FIRST EDITION. With frontispiece and 5 plates. Original green buckram with paper spine label; some very faint spotting to preliminaries, otherwise a very nice uncut copy. First edition of this collection of essays on literary figures. The majority of the papers first appeared in journals such as The Independent Review, The New Quarterly, The Anathæum, and the Edinburgh Review. One exception is The dialogue, "now printed for the first time, from a manuscript, apparently in the handwriting of Voltaire and belonging to his English period." Other titles include Shakespeare's final period; Voltaire and Frederick the Great; and Lady Hester Stanhope. Strachey (1880-1932), was the eleventh of the thirteen children of Sir Richard and Lady Strachey, who took a great interest in literature and politics. Lytton was thus surrounded by many of the leading writers and thinkers of the day. He attended Cambridge, where he befriended Clive Bell, Leonard Woolf, Virginia Woolf's brother Thoby Stephen and his long-time friend John Maynard Keyes. He authored a number of biographies, as well as literary reviews for The Spectator. BMC, XXIV, 136. Seller Inventory # 11633
