(Verlagstext) Leo Perutz (eigentlich Leopold Perutz; * 2. November 1882 in Prag; gestorben 25. August 1957 in Bad Ischl) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller. Im bürgerlichen Beruf war er Versicherungsmathematiker. Perutz' Romane folgen oft dem Schicksal von Einzelnen (z. B. Der schwedische Reiter oder Der Judas des Leonardo). Häufig enthalten sie ein Element des Phantastischen (z. B. Nachts unter der steinernen Brücke) und sind meist in der Vergangenheit angesiedelt oder verweisen auf die Vergangenheit (z. B. St. Petri Schnee). Die Handlung ist spannend erzählt und wird durch zahlreiche Anspielungen, Ironie und verwirrende, sich widersprechende Interpretationen der Ereignisse spielerisch vorangetrieben. Ein zentrales Motiv ist die Frage "Was ist real?", wobei sich konkurrierende Versionen, häufig die eines Ich-Erzählers und die der Umwelt, gegenüberstehen, ohne dass sich entscheiden ließe, welche Version den "tatsächlichen" Ereignissen entspricht. Friedrich Torberg war der Auffassung, "daß er zu den Meistern des phantastischen Romans gehört". Seit Ende der 1980er Jahre wurde Perutz' Werk vom lesenden Publikum wiederentdeckt und erscheint in zahlreichen Neuauflagen. Unter den neueren Autoren zählt besonders Daniel Kehlmann zu seinen Bewunderern. Hans-Harald Müller (* 11. Juli 1943 in Hamburg) ist ein deutscher Germanist. Von 1963 bis 1971 studierte er an der Universität Hamburg klassische Philologie (bis 1965), Germanistik, Anglistik, Vergleichende und Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft als Stipendiat der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (1967-1971). Nach der Promotion 1971 war er von 1971 bis 1977 Assistent am Literaturwissenschaftlichen Seminar der Universität Hamburg. Von 1976 bis 1978 hatte er ein Habilitationsstipendium der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Von 1977 bis zur Emeritierung 2008 lehrte er als Professor am Literaturwissenschaftlichen Seminar der Universität Hamburg. Nach der Habilitation 1984 war er 1985 Visiting Professor am German Department der Washington University. 1991 war er Visiting Professor an der University of the Witwatersrand. 1991 hatte er eine Gastprofessur an der Universität Rostock. Von Januar bis März 1998 lehrte er als Visiting Professor am St John's College (Cambridge).
