About this Item: Harper & Bros., New York, New York, 1854. Condition: Very Good. First edition thus. Single volume--six issues privately bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 864 pages, three-quarter leather over marbled boards. A very good, clean hard cover with minor shelf wear overall, leather scuffed at the spine edges, boards rubbed at bottom edges, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, hinges cracked but sturdy, and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed with some light scattered foxing. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource. Three-quarter leather over boards. Seller Inventory # 30252

About this Item: 1909. First edition. 2 vols. 14 genealogical tables (9 folding) & 3 folding maps. Large 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed and spotted. [vi], ii, 356pp. Bombay, Government Central Press, A scarce, important work. Compiled initially in 1886, the text was brought up to date in 1907 by Captain A.E. Mosse. The authors provide a chronological breakdown of the events, relationships and hostilities of each of the sixteen tribes in the area. In addition, the work discusses the nature of each tribe (i.e. ?a proud, warlike and independent race?), their income, how they're organised and notes on sub-tribes and their reigning families. The appendix includes copies of the treaties and agreements signed between local tribes and the British, many of which led to the establishment of the British Protectorate. Hunter wrote the first account of some of the tribes surrounding Aden in his work An Account of the British Settlement of Aden in Arabia (1877). Aden was ruled as a part of British India from 1839 until 1937, when it became a Crown Colony. Its proximity to Zanzibar, the Suez canal and Mumbai made it an important strategic possession in the British Empire. Seller Inventory # 200402
