About this Item: Sun Print, San Francisco, 1853. Unbound. Condition: Very good. This lettersheet is printed on light blue paper measuring approximately 9.25" x 11.25". The text of the commandments is printed in three centered columns bordered on the right, left, and bottom by ten corresponding vignettes that satirically illustrate each. An eleventh vignette, at the top center, features an elephant using its trunk to call a miner's attention to a Ten Commandments broadside that has been posted to the wall of "a clapboard shanty.". Unused and clean with two horizontal and three vertical folds. Minor edge-wear and pinholes at three of the fold junctions. The humorous, tongue-in-cheek, proscriptive Miner's Ten Commandments addressed bad habits, inappropriate behavior, and temptations associated with Gold Rush life: claim jumping, stealing, fighting, gambling, drinking, cheating, lying, etc. (An easy-to-read, enlarged set of commandments is included.). James M. Hutchings, who had made a fortune in the initial Gold Rush of 1849 but lost it all in a bank failure, first published his parody in the Placerville Herald newspaper in 1853. After it was reprinted as a lettersheet, it proved quite popular with the miners and was so profitable for that he was able to begin publishing his Illustrated California Magazine and amass a fortune once more. An early settler in and fierce promoter of the Yosemite Valley, Hutchings operated the Calaveras Big Tree Grove Hotel. Milford (B-167) notes that this was probably the most popular of the Gold Rush lettersheets. He also notes that the elephant was an allusion to an American idiom popularized during the Mexican-American War, "If one has seen the elephant, one has seen it all," which refers to gaining worldly experience at a significant cost. Not often found in condition this nice. Seller Inventory # 008910

About this Item: A. Roman & Co., San Fancisco, 1877. First edition of this popular tourist guide. Twelvemo. [2, ad for this title printed on light purple paper], frontispiece engraving of Yosemite Valley, title, two-page map of Yosemite and environs, 102 pp. Publisher's purple cloth with blind-rules, gilt cover lettering. Some expected fading to cloth and minor wear to extremities and a bit of marginal toning to two leaves. Overall, an attractive copy of this very scarce guidebook.Currey & Kruska 173.James Mason Hutchings, a failed prospector and budding publisher, came to Yosemite Valley in 1855 after reading Lafayette Bunnell's descriptions of its waterfalls. His illustrated publication, Hutchings' California Magazine, did more than anything else to bring the valley's beauty to the attention of the world. He opened the Hutchings' Hotel and led visitors on tours, constantly promoting the region in a quest for profits. In 1864, Yosemite Valley was set aside from private development and given to the care of California, but Hutchings, technically a squatter, refused to acknowledge the new designation and took his challenge all the way to the United States Supreme Court. The court ruled against Hutchings, setting the legal precedent that would later affirm the creation of national parks.Hutchings' other inadvertent contribution to the national park idea occurred in 1869, when he hired an itinerant sheepherder named John Muir to build a sawmill in Yosemite Valley. In doing so, he gave a home to the person who would become the valley's Ð and the park idea's Ð greatest champion. Hutchings himself would be evicted from the valley, though he would continue publishing books about it and occasionally leading tours there. In 1902, during a return trip, his horses spooked and he was killed when his carriage overturned; he was buried a few days later near the base of Yosemite Falls. Seller Inventory # 72352

Cowan, p 300; Currey & Kruska 164; Farquhar 4c; Greenwood 1475; Rocq 5208; Sabin 34045 Hutchings' Illustrated California Magazine was a magazine published between 1856 and 1861, in San Francisco, which played an important role in popularizing California in general and to a large extent Yosemite National Park in particular. In 1855, entrepreneur James Mason Hutchings, artist Thomas Ayres and two others were the first to tour the area. Hutchings and Ayres were responsible for much of the earliest publicity about Yosemite, writing articles and special magazine issues about the Valley. Ayres' style in art was highly detailed with exaggerated angularity. His works and written accounts were distributed nationally, and an art exhibition of his drawings was held in New York City. The magazine was published monthly from July 1856 to June 1861, five volumes total. Although Yosemite was prominent, it was a magazine of general interest that focused on California's nascent tourist attractions. Each issue contained travel narratives, ranging from simple day trips out of San Francisco to arduous trans-Sierra treks. Hutchings' publicity efforts between 1855 and 1860 led to an increase in tourism to Yosemite. The first edition of this book, which many engravings and articles were from the original magazine, was undated and issued in 1860. It was reprinted in 1861, as a second issue for the first edition. The original edition, of both issues had 10 chapters and 92 engravings. Seller Inventory # 1409250002

About this Item: Chapman and Hall, London, 1865. First British edition. Octavo. 267, [1] pp. Illustrated throughout. Publisher's terra-cotta cloth, covers blocked in a key pattern, gilt spine lettering and decoration. Spine with some minor extremity wear and a bit of soling, two bookplates and an 1866 inscription. Overall, a very good copy of this elusive edition.First publication outside of California of Hutching's marvelous guide book, spurring countless British tourists to make their way for the Golden State. Farquhar 4e notes that this edition contains the "same text and illustrations as c [i.e. the 1861 edition published by J.M. Hutchings & Co. in San Francisco] except that the illustration on p.184 has been redrawn, apparently as a concession to British good taste." That illustration show several people on a boat looking quite seasick; in the 1861 edition, one of the men is actually "losing his lunch" over the side.Intended as a tourist guide to bring more visitors to the Yosemite Valley and Northern California. Englishman James Mason HutchingsÑan enterprising carpenter, gold miner, and journalistÑfirst visited Yosemite in 1855. Having heard of the Mariposa BattalionÕs encounter with a waterfall Ònearly a thousand feet high,Ó Hutchings hired two American Indian guides to take him to the site. About this Item: Chapman and Hall, London, 1865. First British edition. Octavo. 267, [1] pp. Illustrated throughout. Publisher's plum cloth, covers with multiple blind-stamped fillet borders, gilt spine lettering and decoration, yellow endpapers. Spine with some minor extremity wear and a bit of soling, tops a bit bumped. When he returned, he reported his experience in the newspapers as a Òluxurious scenic banqueting.Ó To further whet the curious appetites of readers, he began publishing the HutchingsÕ California Magazine and became the authoritative voice regarding Yosemite. The premier edition contained the first published illustrations of Yosemite Valley, and the total 60 issues, published from 1856 to 1861, succeeded in turning Yosemite into an overnight sensation. He went on the become the leading spokesman for Yosemite and published many items of interest.Currey and Kruska 164. Farquhar 4e/. Seller Inventory # 71223
