Item Description: Collier Books, 1965. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1965. Collier, Quality Paperback Original. First and only printing. Edited with an introduction by Groff Conklin and Noah D. Fabricant, M.D. A unique and elusive volume in which doctors are the detectives, using their special skills as medical men to solve crimes. Some stories are classics and others probably should be but are almost impssible to be found elsewhere, like the very famous Edwardian novelist, Arnold Bennett, author of many well-known novels such as 'The Old Wives Tale' who contributes 'Midnight at the Grand Babylon Hotel', a medical tale of toxicology, which is the only medical detective tale Bennett ever wrote. Also included is the classic tale of the anaphylactic puzzle in 'The Cyprian Bees' by Anthony Wynne. Others included here are MacKinlay Kantor, renowned novelist who wrote 'Andersonville' the great novel of the infamous Confederate prison during the Civil War who contributes a Doc Martindale story, 'The Grave Grass Quivers'. Here also are 'The Head' by Manuel Komroff and 'The Eye' by Gerald Kersh. The famous newspaper journalist and playwrite Ben Hecht give us 'Miracle of the Fifteen Murderers.' 'The Man In the White Mask' by Alan E. Nourse. The fabulous, 'The Mirrored Room' by Alan Rinehart. 'The Other Side of the Curtain', a nearly forgotten classic tale by Helen McCloy. And of course Dr. Watson's shining hour in 'The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier' the rare tale in which Holmes takes up the pen himself to relate a story where Watson and not himself is the hero. A few, like the Doyle story, are well known and oft published, but the majority are gems that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere. Indeed, this volume itself is quite scarce in itself, and is not available in any other edition. Seventeen crimes in all--every one unique unto itself and well worth the reading. This copy, from my personal collection is INSCRIBED to my brother Jeff and myself on the half-title page: 'FOR JEFF AND LARRY--FIGHT OVER WHO GETS WHICH HALF--GROFF C, 22 AUGUST 66.' Jeff got it signed when he was a definer for the first edition of The American Heritage Dictionary for which Conklin served as science editor. A quality paperback whose cover depicts two green gown clad doctors examining a very pale patient on a table who looks very much as if he is beyond medical assisstance. One of the doctors has a green hair-covering cap and mask, while the other seems content to not use such protection. An odd illustration for a 288 page volume that is a fascinating read and a collector's prize. Straight, tight copy with clean white pages. Near Fine in three tone pictorial wraps. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0. Inscribed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 6661

Item Description: Williams & Wilkins, Baltimore, 1953., 1953. Reprint of 1956. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author, Leo M. Zimmerman, on the front free endpaper. Scarce, especially signed. Hardcover with dustjacket. Rust cloth-covered boards, gilt spine lettering, 10 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, 374 pp., index, numerous illustrations (204 figures, including one in color). Book good (damp staining and a little rippling, involving corners and fore-edge of book block, limited to margins and not involving text or illustrations; otherwise, pages clean and binding tight). From the Preface: "The anatomical studies described in this book began some years ago in response to questions raised by the surgeon. During the ensuing years, the reciprocal exchange of experience and information has proved mutually beneficial to both concerned. An accurate concept of the anatomy involved in hernia has been of inestimable value to the surgeon in his choice of operative methods. On the other hand, the problems encountered in the management of hernia and the dynamic and physiological factors concerned, have aided and stimulated the anatomical studies far beyond their original intent. It became quite natural, eventually, to wish to put together the accumulated information gained in a single monograph on the subject of hernia. The anatomical studies go beyond the usual morphological descriptions. They are unique, moreover, in that they include not only the normal anatomical structures as observed in the well-muscled subject, but also the variation from one specimen to another with particular reference to those changes which bear upon the question of liability to herniation."
