[Typed Letter Signed] on University of Victoria, Department of History stationary to Philip [Hofer] from [and signed] "Toby" that begins "I am enclosing with this note a copy of a little book that a colleague of mine and I did to honour our retiring chancellor. I think that it is a nice example of the arts of the typographer - the contents were responsibilities of the various authors - and I would hope that you might be inclined to add this opus to your collection". The two missing volumes are Hawkesworth and Voltaire.The anthology features moral and entertaining tales from a variety of prolific writers. Each volume includes Leigh Hunt"s critical essays introducing the authors and their works.Leigh Hunt (17841859) was an English essayist, poet, and critic known for his wit, liberal politics, and role in the Romantic literary circle. 'Mackenzie belonged to a convivial and litetary club all the members of which, except himself, were young Edinburgh advocates, and at his suggestion they established a weekly periodical on the model of The Spectator. It was entitled The Mirror and was the first Scottish periodical of the kind. Of the hundred and ten papers it contained, forty-two were written by Mackenzie.'- DNB. An excellent set in contemporary full calf, the spines with raised bands & labels, gilt. lighty rubbed, the leading hinge on Vol. II slighty split at the top. Folio (317 x 190 mm). Complete run of all 101 issues published. The Lounger and an earlier journal edited by Mackenzie, The Mirror (1779-80), were "the first Scottish weeklies of their kind. Mackenzie contributed most of the essays and focused on life and society, advocating a way of life based on natural sentiment and harmony. The balance between egotistic and altruistic motives was very much a tenet of the Scottish Enlightenment" (ODNB). Mackenzie (1745-1831), whom Sir Walter Scott called the 'Northern Addison', is perhaps best known for his novel The Man of Feeling (1771); he contributed 57 of the essays in The Lounger. This copy includes a contemporary (or near) manuscript "Key to the Lounger," 5 pp, providing the names of contributors for each issue; the names of contributors (or speculations thereon) have also been inked in a contemporary hand, presumably Whyte's, at the end of many issues. Evidently a subscriber's copy; at the end of the final issue is printed a notice of the publication in volumes of The Lounger, declaring that subscribers who have preserved their numbers will be given a title page gratis.
