About this Item: Philadelphia [PA]: Carey and Hart [Edward Carey & Abraham Hart], 1842., 1842. VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. American first edition. [4], 632 pages. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 15.75cm. Original brown cloth rubbed and scuffed, several patches of varying discoloration to both boards with corners worn, toned and soiled white paper label/bookplate "Duncan. | Auburn." (measuring H 6.9cm x L 11.8cm) obtrusively affixed at center of front board, shallow chipping at frayed spine ends with surface tears at joints, spine's gilt stamped title lettering remains vibrant. Some toning and soiling to edges. Strongest foxing to front and rear endpapers with lighter foxing to several initial and terminal leaves as well as scattered occurrences to interior text pages; old light pencil notation on front pastedown. Interior pages overall remain fairly bright which is rather unusual for books with extended deep South provenances. Binding is firm. A good+ copy with an exceptional association to the prominent Duncan family of Natchez, Mississippi. As President of the Bank of Mississippi and owner of fourteen cotton and sugar plantations, Dr. Stephen Duncan (1787-1867) amassed one of largest fortunes in the antebellum South and acquired the magnificent Auburn mansion in 1827. An opponent of the Civil War and Confederate secession, Duncan left Natchez in 1863 and resided in New York City for the remainder of his life. In 1911 the Duncan family donated Auburn and its adjoining 200+ acre tract to the city of Natchez and sold the home's opulent furnishings (including its large library) at public auction. This book's most recent provenance is from a Starkville, Mississippi estate but was, in turn, likely acquired at that now infamous estate dispersal which stripped one of the state's acclaimed architectural treasures of its magnificent early 19th century collection of furniture and decor. With four pages of Carey and Hart publisher advertisements preceding the title page. This 1842 Philadelphia imprint of DIARY AND LETTERS OF MADAME D'ARBLAY is the first American edition (per OCLC and presumably preceded by the London edition published the same year) and was issued as a two volume set whereas later British and American editions were issued in four, six, and even seven volume sets.
