About this Item: Serials Publications, 2009. Hardcover. Condition: New. The abolition of Slavery in the early 1830s in the British, French and Dutch Colonies of the West Indies/Caribbean led to a severe shortage of Labour in the Sugarcane plantations. The ex-slaves had exercised their right of freedom of choice to discontinue working on the Sugar Cane even for a wage. The subsequent shortage of labour served as a catalyst for the introduction of a system of imported contract labour. The British first introduced labourers from India to the Caribbean through a semi-slave system of contract labour, lasting five to ten years, known as Indentureship. In 1838, Britain sent the first Indian labourers from the port of Calcutta to British Guiana (now Guyana) based on the success of the system in Mauritius. Initially, the Caribbean initiative met resistance, since accusations were levelled at the harsh treatment of the newly-arrived workers. Nevertheless, with lobbying by John Gladstone and other British planters, the system continued and expanded. It was later extended to Trinidad and Jamaica [18451 and then to other Caribbean islands like St. Lucia [1856], St. Vincent [1856], Grenada [1857] and St. Kills [1861]. The system was also adopted by the French and Dutch who took Indians to Martinique [1853], Guadeloupe [1854], French Guiana [1855], St. Croix [1862] and Suriname [1873]. By the time the Indentureship system ended in 1917, about 400,000 Indians came to the Caribbean colonies, most of whom chose to settle in the islands in the New World. Contents Relationsion : An Overview of Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean/Kumar Mahabir 1. Balram Singh Rai Guyana's Indian social and political reformer/Baytoram Ramharack. The abolition of slavery in early 1830s in the British French and Dutch colonies of the West Indies/Caribbean led to a severe shortage of labour in the sugarcane plantations. The ex slaves has exercised their right of freedom of choice to discontinue working on the sugar cane even for a wage. The subsequent shortage of labour served as a catalyst for the introduction of a system of important contract labour. The British first introduced labourer from Indian to the Caribbean through a semi slave system of contract labour lasting five to ten years known as indenture ship. In 1838 Britain sent the first Indian labourers from the port of Calcutta to British Guiana (now Guyana) based on the success of the system in Mauritius. Initially the Caribbean initiative met resistance since accusations were levelled at the harsh treatment of the newly arrived workers. Nevertheless with lobbying by John Gladstone and other British planters the system continued and expanded. 234 pp. Seller Inventory # 74692

About this Item: Serials Publications, 2013. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The chapters in this book on South Asians/East Indians in the Caribbean have been classified into four categories: emotions, assimilation, identity and adaptations. The first category illustrates the neglect of emotions and feelings in the historiography of the people of the Bhojpuri areas in India who migrated to the plantation colonies in the Caribbean and elsewhere. The second category analyses assimilation, mainly in the form of Christian conversion of Hindu and Muslim migrants, which resulted in the absence of mandirs and mosques, and the virtual lack of traditional Indian festivals and ceremonies in Belize, Venezuela and St. Lucia. The third category of the collection deals with the plurality of ethnic identities which is in fact the opposite of assimilation. The last category discusses the social adaptations and reproductions in forms such as Islamic spaces in politics as well as Bollywood movies. This compilation of scholarly work includes new areas of study and fresh perspectives of timeworn topics. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 111026
