He was a municipal engineer in Bassein to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake, an engineer undertaking the construction of a telegraphic line between Siam and Burma, a political commentator on the Kra Canal on the Malay Peninsula and an engineer in charge of mines in English Burma. He was also a keen observer of what the English had been achieving or not in Burma just before they staged a Third War in Burma. Chapters on historyof a politically tainted, pro-French varietyoffer a sound perspective on the colonial politics of the time. Where he was residing and travelling he was also a keen observer of local customs so different and new for a European in the Far East. The author describes the high status of women in Burma and marriage customs too. The ethnic groups of Burma are especially in his focus. Of special interest too are his observations on work and travel in Burmese jungles and the prevalence of large animals such as tigers, leopards and panthers, the hunting of which was necessary to protect workers. After King Thibaw had been deposed he was eager to revise the first editions of his book, playing in the period 1880-81, with new material and political commentary. In this discussion the role of Siam and the great valley of the Chao Phraya or Menam River as a route to Yunnan, figure prominently. For the third revised and expanded edition, which is presented here, he also updated the discussion on how best to realize the shortcut offered by the narrowness of the Kra Isthmus. A project he presented to King Chulalongkorn. F. de Lesseps, of Suez Canal fame, worked on the pilot study contained in this book. Book.

Dupleix (1697-1763) s'engagea au service de la Compagnie des Indes, non pas pour y faire du commerce avec les comptoirs (étoffes, épices) mais pour créer en Orient de véritables possessions territoriales servant de base à la conquête d'une grande zone d'influence qui fournira des matières premières à la métropole et lui servira de débouché pour ses propres productions. Faisant alliance avec les uns et soumettant les autres militairement, il se tailla un empire en Inde. En 1741, il est nommé gouverneur de la Compagnie. En 1748, avec la signature du traité de Londres qui met fin à la rivalité entre français et anglais dans la péninsule indienne, le soutien du roi de France s'estompe. En 1754, il est rappelé en France ; son Empire passe définitivement sous la coupe britannique à l'exception de 6 comptoirs (Surat, Chandernagor, Pondichéry, Mahé, Yanaon et Karikal) qui seront rendus définitivement à l'Inde en 1954. L'empire français des Indes n'aura duré que de 1742 à 1754. Pièces relatives au rôle de La Bourdonnais dans les Indes et à ses démêlés avec Dupleix. La Bourdonnais (1699-1753) entra en 1718 comme lieutenant au service de la Compagnie française des Indes ; en 1740 il fut placé à la tête d'une division destinée aux Indes. Après avoir délivré Mahé, il vint au secours de Dupleix bloqué à Pondichéry ; il mit ensuite le siège devant Madras qui capitula le 24 septembre 1746.
