In nearly three years of combat, 1915 to 1918, Manfred Von Richthofen, the famed Red Baron of Germany, shot down more aircraft than any other aviator on either side of the war . Germany honored him as the greatest hero of the war, and showered him with decorations. He was praised by the Chief of Staff as the equal of three divisions. His blood-red Fokker triplane became the best-known machine in the sky, and Allied fliers considered themselves lucky if they tangled with the Red Baron -- and lived to tell about it! About this Item: The Aeroplan and General Publishing, London, 1918. Hard Cover. Condition: Good -. No Jacket. Grey C. G. (illustrator). First English Translation. Rare. First English Language translation supposedly by Ellis Barker (See below). Printed by Cahill & Co. 140 pages of text plus 2 pages of advertising. Text is very good on browning paper stock. The cover is blueish-green with a flying Red Plane which also shows a falling plane presumably shot down by Richthofen. The original price was 2/6 NET as printed on the front cover. The covers are moderately soiled and the end strip (spine panel) is missing but the binding is solid even if the covers are a bit loose. Two light crack lines on the front cover. No markings or stamps anywhere except for the name of a previous on the front free end page. According to Wikipedia (accessed May 20, 2018), Richthofen completed an autobiographic sketch, (1917). Written on the instructions of the "Press and Intelligence" section of the Luftstreitkräfte, it shows evidence of having been heavily censored and edited. There are, however, passages that are most unlikely to have been inserted by an official editor. "I am in wretched spirits after every aerial combat. I believe that [the war] is not as the people at home imagine it, with a hurrah and a roar; it is very serious, very grim." An English translation by J. Ellis Barker was published in 1918 as The Red Battle Flyer. Although Richthofen died before a revised version could be prepared, he is on record as repudiating the book, stating that it was "too insolent" (or "arrogant") and that he was "no longer that kind of person." Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 008097
