Das Buch erlebte rasch hintereinander mehrere Auflagen, Katherine Mansfield wurde schlagartig als wegweisende Dichterin der modernen short story berühmt. Die in diesem Band zusammengefaßten fünfzehn Erzählungen lassen die Welt der jungen Katherine Mansfield in New Zealand erstehen. Mit scheinbar einfachsten Mitteln beschreibt sie scheinbar mühelos einen Ausschnitt »Leben«. Zu der Erzählung »Das Gartenfest« schrieb sie 1922 an den Schriftsteller William Gerhardi: «. Das ist es, was ich im »Gartenfest« darzustellen versuchte. Die Vielschichtigkeit des Lebens und wie wir versuchen, alles einzupassen, den Tod eingeschlossen. Das ist für eine Person von Lauras Alter verwirrend. Sie fühlt, daß die Dinge anders laufen sollten. Erst das eine und dann das andere. Aber so ist das Leben nicht. Wir besitzen nicht die Gewalt darüber. Laura sagt: »Aber all diese Dinge dürfen doch nicht auf einmal geschehen.« Und das Leben antwortet: »Warum nicht? Wie sind sie denn voneinander zu trennen?« Und sie geschehen doch nun einmal; es ist unvermeidlich. Und es scheint mir, daß Schönheit in dieser Unvermeidlichkeit liegt.« BD. 2: Die satirisch gefärbte Erzählung »Glück', die 1920 der Erzählungssammlung »Bliss and Other StoriesIn einer deutschen Pension« gesammelt veröffentlicht wurden. Auszeichnungen. Elisabeth Schnack ist Herausgeberin und Übersetzerin der > Sämtlichen Erzählungen« von Katherine Mansfield. Katherine Mansfield, 1888 als Kathleen Beauchamps, Tochter eines englischen Bankiers, in Wellington, New Zealand, geboren. 1908 verließ sie endgültig die als provinziell empfundene überseeische Heimat und siedelte nach London um. Ein unstetes Leben begann, es war die Zeit des »fin de siede«, dessen verführerisches Leben sie anzog: »O, ich will die Dinge auf die Spitze treiben!«, wie sie schon 1906 in ihr Tagebuch schrieb. Durch eine unglückliche Heirat fand dieses Leben ein Ende. Nach der Scheidung heiratete sie 1918 den Schriftsteller John Middleton Murry. Paris, London, Cornwall, die Provence waren Stationen eines unruhigen, »unbürgerlichen« Daseins. Unheilbar an Tuberkulose erkrankt, suchte sie 1922 in Frankreich Hilfe, wo sie 1923 in der Nähe von Fontainebleau starb.
