About this Item: The Macmillan Company, New York, 1962. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (illustrator). First Edition. [solid copy, mild browning at page edges and top/bottom edges of boards; jacket shows some wear at spine ends, soiling to rear panel, one tiny tear and associating creasing at bottom of rear panel]. Novel set in a neighborhood bar in lower Manhattan -- "a trifle too far north to be in Greenwich Village and a trifle too far east to be in Chelsea" -- with a narrative built around the fortunes and misfortunes of the "regulars," who "deliver up their lives to Dominick's benevolent dictatorship." Dominick is, of course, the bartender;according to the jacket copy, the author himself had "spent his life as a bartender, a job he now alternates with self-imposed writing sabbaticals." This was his first novel; near as I can tell, he published only one other, "The Death of Peterson's Wharf," the following year. Seller Inventory # 8182

About this Item: The World Publishing Company, Cleveland/New York, 1945. Hardcover First Printing. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (illustrator). Forum Books Motion Picture Edition. [beware: the book's covers are extensively dampstained, although there appears to have been no associated damage done to the inside; as usual, however, with these cheap wartime editions the paper is quite browned; the jacket is heavily edgeworn, with numerous nicks and tiny tears but very little actual paper loss; in summary, keep the jacket on and this will serve as a reasonably presentable copy of a scarce edition]. (B&W photographs) Murder mystery which served as the basis for one of the best of Otto Preminger's early films (and a worthy follow-up to his classic LAURA). The first of five novels by this author, who apparently also dabbled in screenwriting without any notable success. (The only other film credit I've been able to uncover for her was a story credit for the 1950 noir THE FILE ON THELMA JORDON.) This is the Forum Books Motion Picture Edition, with the dust jacket and endpapers illustrated with scenes from the movie, and four additional stills (on two double-sided plates) bound into the book. Dana Andrews starred in the film, with co-stars Linda Darnell (sexy girl) and Alice Faye (nice girl), the latter making a sort of "comeback" (as well as a change of pace, in a non-musical role) after being absent from the screen for nearly two years. Ironically, however, it ended up being Faye's swan song as a major star after she got into a dispute with studio head Darryl Zanuck over his decision to cut down her role in the picture in favor of Darnell's. About this Item: Doubleday & Co., Inc., Garden City NY, 1948. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) [Leo] Manso (illustrator). First Edition. (price-clipped) [book is solid enough, but the cloth has deteriorated in several places (top and bottom edges) exposing the boards; one-time owner's signature on front pastedown; jacket and the boards exposedbeen worn (or eaten?) through in several places, exposing the boards; the jacket is edgeworn, with various small tears and shallow chipping, minor paper loss at base of spine, tiny smudge on front panel, slight fading to spine]. Wynd's scarce second novel, set during the 3-1/2-year Japanese occupation of Singapore during World War II (1942-1945), a time when the city was "teeming with people of all races [and was] tense with conflicts between Japanese conquerors and humiliated former rulers." The narrative, focusing on four Eurasian characters, "probes searchingly into the age-old conflicts, the psychological problems and humiliations that confront persons of mixed blood at every turn." The author himself had been captured by the Japanese while serving with the British Army in Malaya, and spent much of the war in a POW camp. Seller Inventory # 22442

About this Item: Harper & Brothers [1941] (c.1932), New York, 1941. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Leo Manso (illustrator). Reprint. (price-clipped) [light wear to cloth at spine ends, light soiling to top page edges; jacket has a couple of tiny chips at bottom edge, a few minor tears at edges and corners]. A novel of "love, intrigue, horror, and murder," the story of "a brilliant and ruthless woman, [a] governess whose charm and diabolic cleverness brought destruction in their wake." Reprint of the first novel published by this prolific author under her "Joseph Shearing" pseudonym; it originally appeared in England in 1932 under the title "Forget-Me-Not," and was published in America the same year by Harper & Brothers as "Lucile Cléry: A Woman of Intrigue." Paperback editions are common enough, but any hardcover issue is hard to find, especially in decent condition. (This edition bears no date other than the 1932 copyright notice, but the four other titles blurbed on the rear jacket panel were all published in 1941.) NOISBN. Seller Inventory # 17575
