Item Description: Wehman Bros. n.y., New York. 12mo. Stiff orange printed outer wrappers (wrapper title: "Indexed Street Map Greater New York") housing map that unfolds to 35½" X 26½". Very good/near fine. Outer wrapper (only) quite faintly soiled; map itself quite bright and lovely, showing practically no edge tears, with only a few miniscule separations along the original fold line intersections (expertly, archivally closed on verso, thus undetectable). Stunning copy of this undated but circa 1910-1914 era map showing in vibrant detail the Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens Boroughs in blue, red, green and yellow as bright as the day it was published. All "Subway Express Stations," "Subway Local Stations," "Elevated Stations," "Surface Lines" and "Steam Railroads" are boldly marked in red. Double-ruled red border with numbers running down two sides and the alphabet across the other two sides, allowing one to use the coordinates of the "Street Index" list printed on the verso to pinpoint any street. Price on outer wrapper noted as "25 Cents." The map itself prominently notes "Published & Copyrighted by A. Humitsch," although novelty and joke book publisher Wehman Bros. is ostensibly the publisher of record. Verso of the card stock wrapper depicts the covers of 18 of Wehman Bros. more typical productions, namely riddles, tricks, toasts and mainly off-color joke books aimed specifically at and sure to offend just about every ethnic group (African-American, Dutch, Hebrew and many Irish) and certain professions. A superb example of this outstanding street plan. Very scarce in this choice collector's condition. Bookseller Inventory # 37231

Item Description: New York. D. T. Valentine. Edmund Jones & Co. Printers. ., 1866. Illustrated. Frontispiece, a steel engraving by J. Rogers, portrait of Valentine with facsimile of signature. Frontispiece folding map of New York City , with bits of Brooklyn, Hoboken and Riverdale (Bronx). Title page in chromolithography with view of C (illustrator). First Edition. 820 pp. 12mo. One of the famous New York City manuals prepared by Vaslentine (1801Ð1869), Clerk of the Common Council of the City of New York. These were published by Valentine between 1841 and 1868. He was paid $3500 per year for his effort. This copy given with the compliments of City Councilman (Seventh District) Christopher Pullman and signed by him on front free end paper. Late in the volume, in the chapter on the Great Fires of 1776 and 1778, is a second folding map on India paper, in facsimile of the map of 1778 which showed the area of New York City enclosed by the palisades (in 1745) and consumed by the fires. The map had originally been presented to the New York Historical Society by David Grim[m?]. The volumes contain detailed statistics about and history of the City. There are numerous illustrations of buildings and city scenes. Most desirable are the chromolithographs, which, like the text, are pristine in this volume. Bennet calls it "the most important of all illustrated annuals." Known in his latter years as "Old Uncle David", Valentine was beloved in New York and, according to DAB, might have risen to high office had he not been preoccupied with his Manuals.and historical documents. Small tear at one fold and closed tear in one segment of frontis map. Front hinge cracking. Few stains on cover. Folding map of the fires torn into two segments along folds with small closed tears on folds elsewhere on map. All present. Else, Very Good. Sabin 54369. Bennett, US Color PLate Bks., p. 107. DAB. Brown cloth, embossed in the blind, with seal of New York in gilt on front cover and on spine, titled in gilt on spine and decorated in the blind. Pink end papers. Item Description: Kimmel & Foster, New York, 1865. 140 x 203 mm. (5 1/2 x 8"). Attractively matted. Evidence of previous matting (faint brown line at bottom and along right, outside the image, where earlier mat must have been), otherwise fresh, clean, uncreased, and altogther fine. Looking at the island from a southern vantage point, this is a fascinating view of Manhattan and environs at the end of the Civil War, before the great bridges spanned the river. The surprisingly verdant Battery Park is in the foreground, with ships docked at the piers on the tip of the island. The river is swarming with boats, from three-masted tall ships to steamships and ferries--and more vessels are docked all around the edges of the island and across the river at the Brooklyn piers. The great bridges that will connect Manhattan with the outer boroughs have yet to be built, and the tallest structures in the city are the church steeples. In the far distance uptown, we can see the beginnings of Frederick Law Olmstead's Central Park. The density of the buildings and the bustling river traffic establish it as a vital commercial center, the seed of what would become the financial capital of the world.
