[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Original lithograph in colors, one of the 15 proofs printed on Imperial Japan paper and reserved for the artist and his collaborators, one draw with 20 other japan and 250 Arches paper. unsigned Event, as all races in the series except the frontispiece. Superb test of Japan made especially for The Story of Exodus, published in 1966, Chagall painted the 24 lithographs inset printed by Mourlot. Fernand Mourlot, undoubtedly the best artisan lithographer of the twentieth century, was naturally the printer and the friend of the greatest artists of his time. "Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miró, Braque, Dubuffet, Léger, Giacometti . have enriched their own expressions and contemporary art a new area of ??research. With Mourlot, and thanks to him, lithography has acquired both personality and future. " (Pierre Cabanne, in fifty years of lithography). Already printer of the two volumes of the Bible illustrated by Chagall, Mourlot contributed to the formation of the artist in the art of lithography in the 1950s it was at this time that Chagall indeed begins to attend workshop Mourlot to learn the lithographic processes and he became friends with the artisans of printing, including Charles Sorlier. So is this the top of his game as Chagall realizes this Exodus story that coincides with the completion of his immense lithographic and pictorial work on the Bible began in 1930 at the initiative of Ambroise Vollard. This decorative cycle entitled Biblical Message T will also behind the creation of the Marc Chagall Museum, originally the National Museum of Biblical Message Marc - Chagall. Extremely rare first test printed on Japan, the best paper and the best for color prints. Bookseller Inventory # 58300

Item Description: 1960. First Edition. (CHAGALL, Marc) CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book and Art Shop, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio (10 by 13 inches), original beige cloth, original dust jackets each with original lithograph, original acetates. $17,000.Mixed first French, German and English editions of all six volumes in the catalogue raisonné of Chagall’s lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets). Volume I inscribed, "To Shirlyy [sic] and Jack Mandel, Marc Chagall, N.Y. 1963.""Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). His art was aptly described by his biographer as "a troubling alloy of naturalism and magic fiction" (Sidney Alexander). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English, French and German. This set is comprised of Volumes I and III in English, Volumes II and IV in French, and Volumes V and VI in German. Volumes I and II were also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94. Gauss 391. Freitag 1914. Sorlier, 229. The recipients of this copy, Shirley and Jack Mandel, were instrumental in operating Camp NYDA, the summer camp for diabetic children conducted by the New York Diabetes Association.A fine inscribed set. Item Description: [S.n.] (Imp. d'art Voltaire), Paris, 1926. Illustrated with reproductions of seven drawings (of which one full page) by Marc Chagall. (illustrator). Illustrated with reproductions of seven drawings (of which one full page) by Marc Chagall. First edition, first number, complete run. In publisher's printed wrappers. 31, (1) p. Marc Chagall-illustrated, scarce Yiddish avant-garde literary review, the first and only number of the last glint of "Di Khalyastre" movement. "Literarishe Revi" was edited by Ozer Warshavsky, the modernist, avant-garde Yiddish writer, the co-editor and creator of the second almanac of the "Di Khalyastre" (Paris, 1924), and contributor to the last issue of Uri Zvi Greenberg's Yiddish Expressionist magazine the "Albatros" (Berlin, 1923). Warshavsky (1898-1945) started his literary career in his home country Poland in the mid-1910s and his first book, the very well received "Shmuglars" (Smugglers) was published in 1920. He became an active contributor to various Yiddish magazines and other publications in Poland (In di berg; Khalyastre I.), London (Di tsayt), New York (Tsukunft) and in Berlin (Albatros). Warshavsky left Poland in 1923, and after a short stay in Berlin, and London, he settled down in Paris. There he joined the Paris-members of the Khalyastre (Gang), one of the major Polish Yiddish avant-garde movements, rooted in the Yung-Yiddish circle led by Peretz Markish, and co-edited its second almanac, which was entirely illustrated by Marc Chagall. With the same artists and other major Yiddish writers including Ilya Ehrenburg and Itzik Feffer Warshavsky edited this single-issue literary magazine, "Literarishe Revi". Besides the writings of Markish, Ehrenburg, and Feffer, it contains texts by Israel Joshua Singer, Leo Kenig, Ezra Fininberg, Zev (Lupus) Blumenfeld, Sh. Gidal, and Warshavsky's essay on Chagall, and a chapter of his novel "Shnittsayt" (The Harvest). The magazine was illustrated with seven reproductions of Marc Chagall's drawings, among them one full page illustration and a self-portrait of the artist. Scarce, we could trace only five copies in institutional holdings worldwide. Wrappers artistically restored. In fine condition. In publisher's printed wrappers First edition, first number, complete run. Bookseller Inventory # 1175

(Pierre Cabanne, in Cinquante années de lithographie). Bookseller Inventory # 57375
