L'artiste à l'oeuvre, Betzalel sculpte l'Arche] Bezaleel: CHAGALL Marc

About this Item: AMIEL Léon, 1966. (Pierre Cabanne, in Cinquante années de lithographie). [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Original lithograph in colors, one of 15 proofs on Japon Impérial paper reserved for the artist and his collaborators, the only printing along with 20 more on Japan and 250 on Arches paper. Unsigned proof, as with all the proofs in this series except the frontispiece. A superb proof on Japan paper produced especially for The Story of Exodus, which appeared in 1966 ; the 24 hors-texte lithographs printed by Mourlot were by Chagall. Fernand Mourlot was undoubtedly the finest lithographer of the 20th century and was thus both printer to, and friend of, the greatest artists of his time. "Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miró, Braque, Dubuffet, Léger, Giacometti.enriched both their own personal work and contemporary art itself with a new field of research. With Mourlot, and thanks to him, lithography gained both a personality and a future." (Pierre Cabanne, in Cinquante années de lithographie). Having already printed the two volumes of the Bible illustrated by Chagall, Mourlot contributed to the artist's training in the art of lithography during the 1950s. It was during this period that Chagall began to frequent Mourlot's workshop in order to learn about lithographic technique and that he began to make friends with various lithographers, notably Charles Sorlier. It was thus at the peak of his artistic powers that Chagall produced this story of Exodus, which coincided with the end of his immense lithograph. Seller Inventory # 57372

About this Item: George Braziller (Vol. 1); André Sauret (Vols. 2 & 3); Crown Publishers, Inc. (Vols. 4, 5 & 6), New York; Monte Carlo, 1986. Hardcover. Condition: g to vg. First American edition. Folio (12 3/4 x 10"). 220, [2]pp (Vol. 1); 208, [2]pp (Vol. 2); 179, [3]pp (Vol. 3); 180, [4]pp (Vol. 4); 250, [2]pp (Vol. 5); 224, [2]pp (Vol. 6). Each volume with original beige/grey cloth with black lettering to spine and front cover; all volumes with their original lithographic dust-jackets protected with original acetates. Original cardboard slipcase for volume II only. First American edition of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs, richly illustrated with 27 out of 28 original lithographs. "Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously. All were issued separately over a period of 26 years, and published simultaneously in English and French. For more information, see: Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. See Cramer, 43, 56, 77, 94.Vol. I with light wear along edges of dustjacket, small chips and 1/4 inch chip at head of spine. DJ with some inside age toning and light foxing and price clipped. Binding with light foxing along edges. Cardboard slipcase of Vol. II with closed tears along edges. Vol. III with acetate partly chipped at head of spine and upper margin of back cover, and with dust-jacket slightly creased at tail of spine. Vol. V with closed tear along acetate's back cover; dust-jacket rubbed at head and tail of spine, and previous owner's Ex-Libris on inside of front cover (Israel Perry). Slipcase in fair, bindings in good (Vol. I) to very good; acetate in good- to very good, dust-jackets in good+ (Vol. V) to very good; interior in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 42443

About this Item: New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1960. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Chagall, Marc (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Marc Chagall. Text by Gaston Bachelard. Translated by Stuart Gilbert. First American edition, published the same year in Paris by Verve. Publisher's pictorial cloth boards illustrated by Chagall. A very good or better copy, with some light wear and chipping to the spine, but with the spine intact and extremely sturdy (uncommon for this edition), some wear to the extremities, bright boards, library stamp and bookplate to the front free endpaper, some very faint spotting and minor residue to the pastedowns, otherwise extremely bright and fresh interior. Overall, an attractive and presentable copy. Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a prolific artist, born in Belarus and active in France, who is best known for his use of color and images drawn from folklore. His Jewish heritage and spiritual interests manifested themselves throughout his artistic career. After successfully collaborating with Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, Chagall created a series of 105 etchings inspired by the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), begun 1930-1939 and completed 1952-1956. The etchings were published together in 1956 (the English title was Illustrations for the Bible) and he received much critical success. A complementary publication, Drawings for the Bible contains 96 heliogravure (photogravure) reproductions of Chagall's drawings from 1958-1959 "on biblical themes which in general he had not dealt [with] for his illustrations for the Bible reproduced in Verve 33/34." Additionally, this edition has 24 color lithographs that Chagall designed specifically for this volume, including a color pictorial cover. Although the images are sometimes difficult to identify without referring to the image captions at the rear of the text, this volume is both a unique presentation of the Hebrew Bible and a collection of striking and beautiful artwork by a modern master.
