About this Item: Amsterdam: Art and Project 1968 -, 1986. Art and Project was a gallery in Amsterdam run by Adriaan van Ravesteijn and Geert van Beijeren. Between 1968 and 1986, the gallery published 156 Bulletins, which almost always took the form of a single sheet of paper folded in half vertically to form 4 pages. Many of the bulletins were available in the gallery like this or were folded horizontally into 3 sections and mailed to a list of curators, artists, etc. This is a complete set of the original bulletins; there are no reprints (as being offered elsewhere); 92 of the bulletins have been mailed and a large portion of the set was acquired from the Museum of Modern Art Library, New York. About this Item: Sur les Presses de l'Imprimerie J. Paeshuys . for Société des Expositions & Petersburg Press., Brussels & London., 1974. Square 8vo. (200 x 200 mm). [14 doubled leaves; pp. 28]. Leaf with introduction / collophon in French by Gevaert and initialled by Broodthaers in red recto, verso and following leaves with reproduction of various font samples, two central leaves with colour lithographs recto and verso, following leaves with reproduction of various font samples, final leaf verso with colophon / introduction in English by Gevaert and initialled and numbered by Broodthaers in red ink; copyright to foot of inner front wrapper, pagination throughout in red. Original publisher's printed wrappers with cloth-tape spine, titles in red and black and monochrome illustrations to front and rear covers, original white card folder with title to front cover and achevé d'imprimer to rear, later protective black cloth box with black leather label with gilt title to spine. A good copy of Broodthaers' artist book 'Un Jardin d'Hiver' with the original portfolio. From the edition limited to 120 copies, each numbered and signed with initials by Broodthaers in red ink to final leaf; he has also initialled the first page in the same red ink. 'Selon le point de vue de l'auteur et le mien il pourrait servir de commentaire au décor 'Un Jardin d'Hiver' planté en janvier 1974 au Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles'. (From Gevaert's introduction / colophon). Broodthaers’ installation of a winter garden in the museum in Brussels included palm trees, folding chairs and natural history prints. The pictures showed representations which seemed to have been taken from zoological and botanical encyclopaedias of the 19th century, displayed either in picture frames hung on the wall or in horizontal wooden showcases, as for the exhibits in science museums. The four colour lithographs in this artist book are taken similarly from earlier colour-plate bird books. [Jamar 41; Ceuleers 42; Werner 18; Künstler Bücher 16; Das Archiv Sohm 309]. About this Item: Imprimerie René De Keersmaeker., Brussels., 1961. Oblong 12mo. (154 x 286 mm). [9 unnumbered leaves]. Leaf with title, monochrome woodcut and Broodthaers' presentation recto and justification and 'Du Même Auteur' verso, seven leaves with Broodthaers' text recto and verso illustrated with three monochrome woodcuts by Sanders, final leaf with monochrome woodcut by Sanders recto and achevé d'imprimer and publisher's credit verso; in the present copy, the penultimate leaf with a woodcut by Sanders and the text 'LA BETE BLANCHE' recto and 'ANIMAL DOMESTIQUE' verso is duplicated. Original publisher's red printed wrappers with titles in black and monochrome woodcut to front cover, later protective black solander box with leather label with gilt title to spine. A good copy of La Bête Noire conforming to the édition de tête and inscribed to 'Le Requin' Gustave Van Geluwe. From the edition limited to 720 numbered copies, this example with a presentation from Broodthaers to the first leaf and inscribed 'H. C.', conforming to the édition de tête of 20 large paper copies on Arches. Broodthaers' presentation, an early one given that the achevé d'imprimer indicates the book was printed in 1961 'sous le signe de Taureau', i.e. between April 20th and May 20th, is in sepia ink to the first leaf: 'A Gustave Van Geluwe / Le Requin. / Mes Amitiés, / M. Broodthaers / 28 avril 61.' As with many of the examples inscribed by Broodthaers, in his presentation Broodthaers makes reference to the contents of the book, in this case designating Gustave Van Geluwe as 'Le Requin'. In his text, Broothaers describes the 'Requin' (shark) as follows: 'LE REQUIN / Dos noir. Ventre jaune. Tête rouge. - Il mange les cusiniers et boit l'écume de la mer.' The third publication by Broodthaers (after 'Mon Livre d'ogre' and 'Minuit'), 'La Bête Noire' is his first artist book, with the artist's gnomic and ludic text accompanied by five monochrome woodcuts by Jan Sanders (including the cover); Sanders was also responsible for the mise en page. The present copy includes the penultimate leaf in duplicate, a fact which one feels would have amused Broodthaers. Gustave Van Geluwe (1883 - 1962) was the owner of a Belgian fashion house and an important collector of art, principally that produced by Belgian artists in the early years of the twentieth-century. At the outset of Broodthaers' career he was supported by Van Geluwe. [Jamar 28; Ceuleers 29; Werner 3; Die Sammlung Marzona in der Kunstbibliothek pg.100]. Seller Inventory # 46775

About this Item: Brussels: Hossmann (in association with Petersburg Press, London), 1973. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. This book portrays two voyages on the North Sea, one with photographs of an oil painting showing a square rigged vessel returning to port and the other with a photograph of a modern day sloop running before the wind under spinnaker and mainsail. It was made by Broodthaers in conjunction with a 16mm film of still images similar to those in the book and bearing the same title. In the press release accompanying the book and film, Broodthaers explained the combined work in this way: "A book suggesting image as function. A book suggesting the text as function. More than a theory, the subject of this proposition reflects a simple image of the frustration that rules the social condition of today. . . . Perhaps I should add that the subject shines." His explanation in the book itself is more understandable: “It is up to the attentive reader to find out what devilish motive inspired this book’s publication.” The oil painting of the square rigger was purchased by Broodthaers at a Paris flea market and it made several appearances in his work. The photograph of the modern sloop was taken by Broodthaers himself. In the book and in the film details of the oil painting are examined closely by the camera moving towards the painting and then withdrawing, but always in sharp focus. This mixing of media, viz., film, printing, painting, and still photography, became an underlying basis for Rosalind Krauss’ eponymous book "A Voyage on the North Sea: Art in the Age of the Post-Medium Condition," where she argued that art in the 1970s was made without regard to the constraints of a particular medium. This copy of the book is from the Brussels edition by Hossmann in association with the Petersburg Press in London, and is part of an edition that does not include the 16mm film. The text is in French. Two other editions were published: one in English at the Petersburg Press in London and one in German at the Verlag DuMont Schaberg in Cologne. Seller Inventory # BFA3

About this Item: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. FACSIMILE ARTIST BOOK. ATLAS - measuring 1 5/8 x 1 1/8 inches (4 by 3 cm) with a simple black slipcase - is a miniature book by Marcel Broodthaers, made after the model of the fifteenth-century 'incunable'. It was originally published in 1975 in an edition of fifty numbered copies and it is Broodthaers's last book, created shortly before his death in 1976. The object plays on language and functions in a manner characteristic of Broodthaers's sense of humour: it refers to the use of atlases by militaries pursuing territorial conquest - a task for which this tiny edition is absurdly unsuitable - in order to make artists aware of their own such victories. Broodthaers deepened the level of intrigue by not following any established geographical organization; instead, he chose to present a small selection of countries in alphabetical order, each represented graphically at the same size. This facsimile edition published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, makes the artist's book available for the first time since the opriginal printing, in a limited edition of 500 copies - not numbered. Mint condition (new) . Housed in a black linen box within a foam lining and held by a red ribbon. Seller Inventory # 11087

About this Item: Museum of Modern Art; Édition : Box Slp Fa (1 mars 2016), 2016. Couverture souple. Condition: Neuf. Dust Jacket Condition: Neuf. Measuring just 1 x 1.5 inches with a simple black slipcase, The Conquest of Space is an artist?s book by Marcel Broodthaers originally published in 1975 in an edition of 50 numbered copies. As Broodthaers? last book, it embodies the artist?s sardonic sense of humor with its plays on language and function--the title references the historic use of atlases by militaries for territorial conquests, but printed at such a miniature scale, it is unusable for its intended function. Furthering the level of intrigue with the book, Broodthaers did not follow established geographical organization, choosing rather to present only a small selection of countries organized alphabetically and graphically represented in identical size. This facsimile edition makes the artist?s book available again for the first time since the original printing in a limited edition of 500 copies. Seller Inventory # ABE-1494938393125
