Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition, the co-author Brian Hill's own copy with his bookplate designed by Sidney Lewis Ransom. 8vo., original black cloth lettered in red on spine. With the front panel and spine of the original dust wrapper pasted onto the front free endpaper and paste-down. A little rubbing to boards, a little light browning to half-title, otherwise a very good copy. British author and translator Brian Hill, who was born on May 2, 1896, in London, England, wrote poetry, compiled anthologies, and translated works from French and Latin, including translations of Theodore Gautier and Verlaine. Brian Hill also wrote detective and mystery novels in collaboration with Joanna Elder Giles under the pseudonym of Marcus Magill. Additionally Hill was a contributor to Bookman, Times (London), and other periodicals and newspapers. Brian Hill and Sir Geoffrey Keynes were the executors of Samuel Butler's literary estate and together they edited Samuel Butler's correspondence with Miss E. M. A. Savage, as well as Butler's notebooks. Hill was a member of the social group known as The Launderers. Less well known than the 'Bright Young Things', the group was centred around the theatre district in London's West End, and they wrote and performed plays in small theatres and other private venues, most commonly in a restaurant called The Cutty Sark, which was a favoured hangout of the Launderers. They also wrote and produced a play at Elsa Lanchester's famous The Cave of Harmony club, known for its bohemian and avant-garde entertainments, which almost proved to be disastrous, despite the fact that The Cave of Harmony was ostensibly a "private club" which generally made it immune from morals prosecutions. The Cave of Harmony was a popular meeting place for London intellectuals, including H G Wells, Aldous Huxley and Evelyn Waugh. Sidney Lewis-Ransom was an artist and poster designer in the Art Nouveau style. His other bookplate designs included commissions for the actor Harold Chapin and James Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour Prime Minister. This bookplate design is reminiscent of William Nicholson.

Woodcut printer's device to title-pages with motto 'Ne extra oleas', woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. Marginal notes in several different old hands to the first two volumes. Head margins faintly toned, occasional light spotting and a bit of foxing to vol. III, vol. I with unobtrusive repair to final leaf. Contemporary vellum with titles very nicely inked to spines, fore-edges turned in, edges lightly sprinkled blue. Vellum a bit dusty, a few small marks, very good indeed. Vol. I has an illegible ownership inscription in an old hand to its ffep, and a second inscription (possibly reading 'W.W. Kosteri') to the title-page. According to Harwood "the most beautiful and correct edition of Seneca.". Dibdin considers it "one of the rarest and dearest of the octavo Variorum classics: its typographical beauty is equal to its editorial correctness. Scholars who possess it will do well to treasure so valuable and commodious a work." This Elzevier edition is unusual in presenting in its third volume the writings of the younger Seneca, which Dibdin notes are omitted in the Antwerp editions. It contains the best notes available: those of the first great modern Senecan, Justus Lipsius in the late sixteenthcentury, and those of the second great Seneca scholar, J. F. Gronovius. Daniel Elzevier's dedication, to Simon Arnauld, Marquis de Pomponne, covertly discusses the part which Elzevier played as printer for an orchestrated anti-Jesuit campaign. Willems 1477; Schweiger II, 913; Dibdin II 398-399.
