About this Item: NP (circa 1901), 1901. A single sheet, folded, to give four 7 x 4.5 inch pages. The letter is on pages 1 and 3 only, pages 2 and 4 (the versos) being left blank. Entirely handwritten. A short letter, addressed to a Mr. McLure, in which Corelli seeks to schedule a meeting. It is dated simply "Sunday" and signed "Faithfully yours / Marie Corelli" with her London address "47 Longridge Road, Earl's Court, S.W." underneath the signature. Marie Corelli (1855-1924), was an enormously popular British writer of often occult-themed fiction, whose novels are considered by some to be minor classics of supernatural fiction. Her books had a wide readership - including Gerald Gardner who had four of her novels in his library - and Aleister Crowley, who refered to her in several book reviews. A barely visible one-inch closed vertical tear in the centre of both leaves (across the signature of the second leaf), a horizontal crease across both leaves from being folded into an envelope. Otherwise VG condition. Seller Inventory # 58895

About this Item: 1908, 1908. 54 lines, in black ink, over all four sides of folded 8vo sheet; a single horizontal fold. Corelli writes to an unknown gentleman, offering guidance in respect to the upbringing of his young daughters, and to explain controversial elements of her most celebrated novel The Mighty Atom. She informs her correspondent, 'The Mighty Atom is a story drawn from life - 'Lionel' was a real character - the manner of his suicide was different, as the poor little fellow drowned himself. "Mrs Valliscourt" still lives'. She urges him, 'bring your young daughters up in the . simple faith of the Protestant Church of England - a faith which made all the good women of long ago (in the early Victorian era) such gentle wives and good mothers'. She continues, 'A woman without faith is a lost angel - and the redemption of man is not in her hands', and concludes with the thought, 'without the deep abiding sense of God above us, life is hardly worth living'. The letter is signed 'very sincerely your, Marie Corelli'. A fascinating letter, indicative of the strong Christian faith that informed her writing. Thelma / Jane Novak Edition / Jane: Corelli, Marie

About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1922. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Eight glossy B&W film production stills (including frontispiece) (illustrator). Shows 1902 R.F. Fenno & Co. copyright, but this is the 1922 G&D photoplay edition, with 8 glossy B&W production stills (yes, eight including frontispiece, as called for by Miller.) G&D ad to jacket rear panel offers Sinclair Lewis' "Main Street" (1920) and "Free Air" (1919), Mary Roberts Rinehart's "Dangerous Days" (1919), James Oliver Curwood's "The River's End" (1919), etc. Handsome original G&D color dust jacket missing bottom two inches of spine, has been backed with a heavier piece of matching paper stock. Dated 1923 and warmly inscribed in purple ink to verso of the glossy frontispiece photo "To My Darling Virginia" and signed "Mother Dear." Acquired from Howard Prouty at ReadInk in Los Angeles, who writes "I obtained this particular book (along with quite a few others) from the late movie producer Walter Seltzer a couple of years before he passed away in 2011. Walter's mother-in-law was Jane Novak, and a number of the books in the collection had Jane's bookplate or ownership signature. Walter's wife (Jane's daughter), who predeceased him by a few years, was known to one and all as 'Mickey,' but I am fairly certain she's the 'Virginia' of the inscription -- I don't believe she had any siblings, so I suspect that Virginia was her birth name. In any event, there's no doubt whatsoever that the inscription itself was written by Jane." Silent film leading lady Jane Novak (1896-1990) -- elder of two acting sisters -- starred in numerous Westerns opposite William S. Hart and then Tom Mix, though "Thelma" (in which her young daughter Virginia also appeared, as shown in one of the glossy production stills, here) was described as a "society melodrama" in which she "scored a personal triumph." Novak appeared less frequently in the talkies, playing a small role in her friend Alfred Hitchcock's "Foreign Correspondent" (1940.) 520 pp. (looks like the type was picked up from an earlier edition) followed by 8 pp. publisher's ads. Reduced from $485. Inscribed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 007751
