Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. 8VO, br. ed. pp.352. Is the history of the modern world the history of Europe writ large? Or is it possible to situate the history of modernity as a world historical process apart from its origins in Western Europe? In this posthumous collection of essays, Marshall G. S. Hodgson challenges adherents of both Eurocentrism and multiculturalism to rethink the place of Europe in world history. He argues that the line that connects Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to modern times is an optical illusion, and that a global and Asia-centred history can better locate the European experience in the shared histories of humanity. Hodgson then shifts the historical focus and in a parallel move seeks to locate the history of Islamic civilisation in a world historical framework. In so doing he concludes that there is but one history - global history - and that all partial or privileged accounts must necessarily be resituated in a world historical context. The book also includes an introduction by the editor, Edmund Burke, contextualising Hodgson's work in world history and Islamic history.

Brossura Editoriale. Condition: Nuovo.

ABOUT THIS SET: The Venture of Islam has been honored as a magisterial work of the mind since its publication in early 1975. In this three-volume study, illustrated with charts and maps, Hodgson traces and interprets the historical development of Islamic civilization from before the birth of Muhammad to the middle of the twentieth century. This work grew out of the famous course on Islamic civilization that Hodgson created and taught for many years at the University of Chicago. Volume 1 analyzes the world before Islam, Muhammad's challenge (570-624), and the early Muslim state of 625 to 692. Hodgson then reviews the classical civilization of the High Caliphate, discussing such topics as the bloom of Arabic literary culture, Muslim personal piety, and the dissolution of the Absolutist tradition. This volume also contains a general introduction explaining the author's method and terminology; a prologue on the Islamic vision in religion and civilization; and a Foreword by Reuben Smith, who, as Hodgson's colleague and friend, finished the work after the author's death and saw it through the press. Volume 2 investigates the establishment of an international Islamic civilization through about 1500. Volume 3 describes the second flowering of Islam: the Safavi, Timuri, and Ottoman empires. The final part of the work analyzes the widespread Islamic heritage in today's world. Each volume contains charts and maps, a glossary of terms and names, and an index.(Publisher).
