About this Item: Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1919. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good minus. 1st Edition. The author, Margaret Marshall Saunders, is, of course, best known for her classic dog story Beautiful Joe. On Oct. 23, 1929, the author, who lived in Toronto, was approached by a couple celebrating their Jubilee Day there and graciously signed and dedicated this copy of the book to them. Book is slightly bowed. Binding is green cloth boards with beautifully preserved tipped-in illus. The corners are slightly bumped and / or frayed; the head and foot of the spine are wrinkled, but the spine is uncreased; very light wear to head and foot of spine; some soiling and fraying are seen on the back cover; the front cover's fore edge has a one-inch white mark a few inches from the bottom. Hint of water damage to bottom corner of last end paper, but nowhere else. The binding is tight and secure save for separation beginning to appear at the gutter of pp.64-65 and 160-61. The interior is clean and unmarked but for one exception. Sadly, a P.O.'s decision to place a newspaper clipping mentioning the author's 70th birthday has resulted on pp.56 & 57 being yellowed to the exact dimensions of the clipping. A lesson for us all!.
