About this Item: Amsterdam Aux Dépens de la Compagnie, 1725. (36,5 x 24,5 cm). Erste Ausgabe. - "The first book devoted entirely to marine science, and the first oceanographic study of a single region. Marsigli conducted an intensive investigation of the Gulf of Lyon in the south of France, taking soundings to obtain a profile of the sea floor, analyzing the relationship of the lands under and above water, studying the water's physical properties (temperature, density, color) and its motions (waves, currents, tides), and describing the marine life of the region. Marsigli was the first to give an account of formation of the continental shelf and slope, and the first to class corals as living beings rather than as inorganic mineral formations. His belief that the land and the sea bed formed a continuous structure was confirmed when he discovered rock strata dipping below sea level at the coast. Marsigli's work prefigured the systematic oceanographic exploration that would begin fifty years later with Captain James Cook's voyage in the 'Endeavor'" (Norman). - Titel leicht gebräunt und mit kleiner restaurierter Stelle. Insgesamt sauberes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar in dekorativem Einband. - DSB 9, 134; Norman 1445; Nissen ZBI 2699. Seller Inventory # 106643-01

Natuurkundige beschryving der zeën.The Hague, De Compagnie,: MARSIGLI, Luigi Ferdinando.

About this Item: XXVI, 216 pp.First edition of the Dutch translation, beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured, of a popular description of plants and corals of the sea by Luigi Ferdinando Conte de Marsigli (1658-1730), a celebrated Italian geographer and natural scientist. First published at Bologna in 1700, it was the first work to describe what the author himself called "coral-flowers". He minutely and very correctly described and designed them, but he drew the wrong conclusions, seeing them as plants in stead of plant-animals. But even when this was corrected by later scientists like Jussieu and Ellis, Marsigli's book continued to be published for its beautiful plates, and its accurate descriptions. In the present edition the publisher asks his readers just to substitute the word plant for animal. In very good condition, with virtually untrimmed edges. Binding worn along the extremities and sides slightly damaged.l Bibl. Natura Artis Magistra 1390; Nissen, ZBI, 2700; Poggendorff II, col. 59. Seller Inventory # 3498

About this Item: 1741. First Edition thus; large folio (580 x 414 mm); [5] preliminary leaves including elaborate engraved allegorical frontispiece performed by F. Ottens, letterpress title-page printed red and black, the last leaf of the preface misbound, thirty-one engraved map-sheets: five full-page, six double-page, one map on two uncut double-page sheets and one on eighteen sections. Some waterstaining affecting the preliminaries. Recent quarter calf with contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, red morocco label with gilt lettering to spine; boards rubbed and corners slightly bumped. The Hague : aux depens de la Compagnie, Luigi Ferdinando, Conte de Marsigli (1658-1730) was an Italian army officer and hydrographer who carried out a highly important and wide-ranging survey of the Danube River valley, describing the antiquities, minerals, fossils, fish, birds, and so on, of the region, published as the encyclopedic Danubius Pannonic-Mysicus ? Observationibus geographicis, astronomicis, hydrographicis, historicis, physicis perlustratus in 1726, as six volumes. The book was illustrated with thirty-three maps drawn from the highly detailed hydrographical survey of the region that he had made, creating the most important delineation of the Danube River yet in print. The maps were subsequently re-issued as La Hongrie et le Danube ., first in 1741 (as here) and then in 1744, with two of the original maps discarded. One of the most interesting sheets depicts the town of Semnitz (modern Banská ?tiavnica / Selmecbánya, in Slovakia), highlighting the mining being carried on under the town, with the network of tunnels and shafts. At the time, Semnitz was a major source of gold and silver, but also known for the technological advances made there to keep the mines working: in the late 1740s engineers there designed the first pump for removing water from mines.
