Sommervogel I, 1091ff; RGG I, 844; Jöcher III, 237 (unter Martinus). About this Item: Mainz, Johann Albinus, 1611., 1611. circa 13 x 7,5 cm. 153 pp., 1 blank leaf, with printer s device Contemporary vellum with laces "De Backer/S. I, 1095, 20. Early, probably third edition (first 1609) of this work by the jesuit Martinus Becanus (Verbeeck, van der Beeck; 1561-1624) from Brabant in the controversy about the Oath of Allegiance that was introduced in England after the Gunpowder Plot in the year 1606. It was required of all English Catholics and made it legally high treason to obey the authority of the pope rather than the king. One of the harshest critics of this policy was Cardinal Bellarmine who claimed the formula were "contrary to faith and salvation". Becanus takes the side of the cardinal and adresses the emperor as well as other European regents trying to show the flaws in the justifications of James s decision. - BOUND WITH: II: Becanus. Refutatio torturae torti, seu contra sacellanum regis Angliae, quod causam sui regis negligenter egerit. Mainz, Albinus 1611. 68 pp., 2 blank leaves, with printer s device. De Backer/S. I, 1095, 22. Probably second edition (first 1610). One of several works in the polemic between jesuits and anglicans about the oath of obedience (or allegiance, juramentum fidelitatis). Here Becanus responds to William Tooker (1557-1621) the English theological writer who defended the decision and explanation of James I. Tooker replied with several texts directed explicitly at Becanus in 1611. - The whole controversy is of the greatest importance for the modern discussion of secularisation and the separation of the church and the state. It still resonates in the positions of 20th century philosophers such as Carl Schmitt and Hans Blumenberg (cf. Bourdin, B. The Theological-Political Origins of the Modern State: the controversy between James I of England and Cardinal Bellarmin. 2010). - Endpaper and white leaf between the two works with several invectives against James I in manuscript. - Small old inscription to the first title, minor browning, somewhat dusty, else fine.
