Fine, fresh, unused copy in bright, crisp dust jacket with the only flaw being a very small chip to the inner edge of the rear panel. The tradition of masking horses in North Americ is over five centuries old, ointroduced by the Spanish horses of Columbus and Cortes. Rock paintings from the 1700s survive showing the Indian use of armored horses wearing full head coverings. After the end of inter-tribal warfare in the 1880s, usage of horse masks continued in Indian parade occassions. The magnificent illustrations in this volume represent 45 historic horse masks from museum and private collections; most date from the 19th century and all but one were made before 1915.

Also features a chapter on Navajo bits and bridles by jeweler and silversmith Robert Bauver.

Though the Spanish brough metal bits of forged iron, jingling with chains of silver and gold to the Americas beginning in 1519, Native Americans, also faced with the promlems of horse control but lacking in the technology to produce iron bits, invented a host of alternate solutions. More than 500 color photographs in this volume illustrate the American Indian inventions.
