Condition: Good. First published in 1850 shortly after her ground breaking Concordance to Shakespeare (1846), this is a new edition. Clarke's purpose of the tales, was to trace the 'antecedents to Shakepeare's women', imagining their childhood's and histories. This volume (1 of 3), contains 3 tales (of 15): Portia: The Heiress of Belmont; The Thane's Daughter; and Helena: The Physician's Orphan. Elegant small 8vo in blue linen, it's volume number marked only with a star. Artist bookplate of Arline McCarthy "Un live est un ami qui ne trompe jamais".
