About this Item: The Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, 1925. Disbound. Walcott, Mary Vaux (illustrator). First Trade Edition. Folio measuring approximately 30 x 36.5 cm. 383 of 400 plates present. Five volumes comprising of 80 plates per volume. Vol 1: 1- 80; Vol 2: 81-160; Vol 3: 161-240; Vol 4:241-320; Vol 5: 321-400. Volume one is missing plates 1 through 14 and plates 78 - 80. With the exception of these missing plates the remainder of the volumes are complete with all plates present. All of the plates are housed in stitched laminate which in some instances has caused the plates housed within them to rumple slightly (please see attached photographs). Lacking the first of five green cloth backed clamshell portfolio with four accompanying booklets present. Ex-library with usual stamps and stickers to the booklets, the plates themselves remain free of any library markings though they are housed in a utilitarian stitched laminate in an effort at preservation; the illustrations themselves remain vibrant with the scientific names and descriptions printed on the reverse. Overall, the set is a representative and nearly complete sample of the works of Mary Walcott, who was a prominent American naturalist and artist often referred to as the "Audubon of Botany" in tribute to the excellence of her illustrations. Along with her paleontologist husband, Charles Doolittle Walcott, they travelled widely throughout the Canadian and American Rockies where she frequently travelled to as a young woman. With her husband's support as Secretary of the Smithsonian her works were published in a magnificent Five Volume Set comprising of 400 coloured plates based on her watercolour paintings over a decade. Referenced in Nissen 2094; Stafleu & Cowan 16.550. Seller Inventory # 40815
