About this Item: New York: Harper & Row Publishers. 1962 copyright for Sendak. 1963 copyright for Knight., 1963. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. CHRISTMAS THEME: Slipcase shows some wear on edges, NO ISBN # on bottom or on copyright pages. Although the slipcase is Maurice Sendak's Nutshell Library, I found a copy of Hilary Knight's The Night Before Christmas inside it and eventually got it signed. All four books are the same small size approx. 3 x 4. The three unsigned Sendak copies, Pierre, One Was Johnny, Alligators All Around, are all bound in mauve-colored cloth boards with an illustration of oak leaves and acorns stamped in black on the front covers, and illustrated in color throughout; DJ's covered in mylar showing a little edgewear on top and bottom spine edges only. The SIGNED and DATED Hilary Knight copy has black and white illustrations and is nearly fine book covered in pink cloth plus DJ [1963] signed in red ink on free front: From Hilary Knight, 2004. It's a little oddball set but very charming. Not many of these books survived intact as children, the end customers, loved them to pieces. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 7583

Sendak, Maurice (illustrator); Over 25 b/w Illustrations (including title page) (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. APPEARS TO BE A SPECIAL SIGNED EDITION, most probably issued by Harper's to mark DeJong's 1953 triumph at the Newbery Awards - as the author of the winner and two runner-ups! This copy is signed by author on a specially inserted parchment leaf at front (definitely as issued by publisher). Adventure concerning storks and their nesting places in a small Dutch fishing village; winner of the 1955 Newbery Award. Notable for the Sendak illustrations (including color jacket spine and upper cover). Few small nicks, slight soiling, browning and rubbing to jacket; previous owner's neat ink name on front endpaper; jacket price-clipped; slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to endpapers and preliminaries).
