About this Item: Battledore Ltd, Kingston, NY, 1996. paperback. Sendak, Maurice (illustrator). 11 x 8.5 inches. paperback. 48 pages. First edition. This wonderful exhibition catalogue highlights a myriad of works illustrated and written by this celebrated children's book writer and artist. This exhibition covers the first time Sendak's original works were shown in Asia, beginning in October 1996 at Maruzen Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan, travelling in December to Kyoto and Nagoya and then to Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok, Thailand in January of 1997. Illustrating more than eighty books, Sendak's original drawings are in constant demand by private collectors everywhere. Nearly all of his artwork is archived at the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia. Past loan exhibits have been presented at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, while commercial galleries have offered modest shows with work on loan from the artist. Significant drawings are rarely ever offered for sale, especially his highly finished pencil studies which precisely detail both concept and development of his designs or alternate visions closely resembling his published pictures but are just a bit different. This catalogue contains Sendak's pictures, original prints and posters designs presented for the first time in Asia. Many of these drawings have never been offered for public sale anywhere and are of high quality and importance, covering more than thirty-five years of creativity. These works include actual preliminary studies for many of the artist's most important books including WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN, OUTSIDE OVER THERE, his early and little-known version of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, illustrations from German fairy tales by Brentano and the Brothers Grimm, pictures for theatrical costumes, poster designs, and record jackets, plus his homage to the battle against censorship on behalf of the American Booksellers Association. Twenty-six of the drawings in this catalogue were actually used for publication and represent the largest collection of such pictures ever shown at one time. Distributed for Battledore Ltd. About this Item: Harry Abrams, 2003. Hardcover. Condition: FINE. Tracing Maurice Sendak's life and work from 1980 to the present, this illustrated volume is filled with projects in various mediums, both inside and outside the children's book arena. Reproduced here are lavish set and costume designs for a number of theatrical and dance productions, from The Nutcracker to The Magic Flute to The Love for Three Oranges. Also represented is artwork for numerous posters, CD covers, book jackets, and adult books, as well as children's picture books. Profusely illustrated, this book introduces Sendak's recent work, particularly in the theater, to a wider audience and pays tribute to his genius.Playwright Tony Kushner, a longtime friend, and more recently, a collaborator with the artist, chronicles Sendak's work and provides new insights into his unique past. Using Sendak's journals, personal interviews, and a wealth of shared anecdotal experience, Kushner paints a singular portrait of a man with burning passion, acute sympathy, and a hunger for beauty. Readers are offered an intimate view into Sendak's personal and professional frustrations, as well as his triumphs. pp. 223 illusts Maurice Sendak ranks as one of the best known and loved children's book artists in the USA, and has been awarded both the Hans Christian Andersen Medal and the Caldecott Medal. This volume picks up where Selma Lanes' monograph of his work "The Art of Maurice Sendak", published in 1980, leaves off, tracing Sendak's life and work from 1980 to 2003. An extended essay by playwright Tony Kushner, a long-time friend of Sendak's provides an intimate view of the artist. Kushner not only gives a chronological overview of Sendak's work, but also allows us to see him as an accomplished author and artist redefining his legacy, and as a man coming to terms with himself. (Please note: Over standard weight. Orders via ABE Books may incur additional postage charges. About this Item: Glyndebourne Festival Opera/National Theatre. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. A poster for the National Theatre Exhibition of Maurice Sendak's work. This naturally included the work Sendak did for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera commission for the opera by the composer Oliver Knusson. It was based on Sendak's wonderful classic story. This poster is very scarce indeed, and this copy of it has obviously been attached to somebody's wall at some time. It has slightly damaged corners where it has had sticky tape removed. BUT - this is a very rare copy of this highly collectable poster. It measures about 30"x20". Seller Inventory # ABE-1541164739055
