Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos (illustrator). 1st. New Zealand's rugged coast and adjacent ocean waters have seen many shipwrecks, marine accidents and some war losses. In this book, one of the New Zealand Tragedies series published by Grantham House. well-known NZ marine historian Gavin McLean covers maritime aspect for the series. His selection is conveyed in four parts --- Hazards of the Coast; Early Wrecks, Unnatural Causes and Recent Events. Each each part has several sub-sections with Unnatural Causes headings being Villiany and Casualties of War while Early Wrecks has seven sub-sections. Every aspect of marine accidents and disaster are covered, beginning with the earliest recorded wreck, of a sealing vessel from Australia in 1795, up to the the most recent notable shipwrecks including the inter- island ferry Wahine in 1968, the Russian cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov in 1986 and the Green Peace ship Rainbow Warrior, sabotaged in Auckland harbour by French saboteurs in 1985. Some wrecks cost many lives, notably HMS Orpheus wrecked on the bar at the entrance to Manukau Harbour in 1863 with the loss of 189 of her complement, still the most deadly in terms of lost lives. In his wide cross-selection of incidents Gavin McLean covers almost every type of maritime misfortune possible including storms, fire at sea, collisions, war, groundings, the dangers of treacherous bar harbours, and the lucky ships that met mishaps but not disaster or were salvaged. A well-rounded account to the toll of ships and lives on the NZ coast from the days of sail to steam and to the ships of today, from coasters to liners and all in between. First edition from Grantham House of 1990, 217 pages including glossary, reading list and index b/w photos and some art throughout, few documents/maps etc. Colour pictorial card covers are VG+ with crease to lower front corner, internally excellent, no inscriptions.

Paperback. Condition: Good. In this unusual book a number of New Zealand's leading historians write about their own favourite 'historic' places where the past comes alive. Special events or times in our history are linked with their own personal memories and the physical presence of these 'places' today. Anne Salmond muses on her home town of Gisborne, with its rich intersection of Maori and European history. Erik Olssen ponders a lifetime of change in Dunedin; the stories that ooze from its streets and alleyways, brick and bluestone making life here a bit like living in the text of a favourite poem or novel. Jock Phillips visits Wanganui, the 'war memorial capital of the world', musing on how its war memorials sum up the uneasy history of the racial frontier in New Zealand, and what we can learn from them about a society. The fate of the Kiwis at Gallipoli are relived by Ian McGibbon, who walks, we are told, where New Zealand's national identity was forged ninety years ago. 266 pages.
