He found himself being dismissed from teaching jobs because he dared to appear in the 1950s as an 'unfriendly witness" before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. With this book, "Death Song", McGrath bravely faced, accepted serenely, and embraced his own oncoming demise. In these poems McGrath looks death in the face and finds, not an implacable enemy, but a natural progression from one state of being to another. As it says on the book's cover, "Mcgrath celebrated life more nakedly, more enthusiastically, than any American poet since Whitman, reaffirming our interconnectedness with one another and with the natural world." This was Thomas McGrath's last book., issued posthumously after his death in September, 1990.
