Contains (x), 400, pp; 385 pp with a total of 97 full-page monochrome illustrations throughout both parts. Pencil name to the front paste down dated 1855, spine a little sun faded, text block and plates are free from any foxing or age toning to the paper. Member of the P.B.F.A. A two-volume set containing Kenny Meadows' witty caricatures of various English stereotypes in the nineteenth century, including the Chaperon and the Debutante, the Old Squire, the British Sailor, the Radical M.P., the Medical Student, the Factory Child, and many more. These illustrations are accompanied by original essays by distinguished writers, such as William Makepeace Thackeray, Leigh Hunt, and others. In half calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, though somewhat rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Plate of 'lawyer's clerk' detached but intact. Very Good. book.

Early edition. Two volumes. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt pictorial spines. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume and 87 further wood-engraved plates drawn by Kenny Meadows and engraved by Orrin Smith (complete). A very good set, the bindings square and secure with a little cracking to the front and rear hinges of volume two. The contents with a little toning to page edges and the odd minor mark to margins are otherwise in very good order, clean throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An attractive set. A wonderfully illustrated mid nineteenth-century satirical guide to the English people, covering all notable characters from chimney sweeps, street conjurers and factory children to undertakers, pawnbrokers, politicians and debutantes. Each individual is illustrated with a portrait, with the accompanying essays supplied by a variety of hands, most notably including William Makepeace Thackeray (the fashionable authoress, Captain Rook and Mr. Pigeon), Leigh Hunt (the omnibus conductor, the monthly nurse,) and Douglas Jerrold (fifteen entries, including the auctioneer, ballad singer, hangman, postman and pew opener). The publishing history of the work is a little unclear; originally issued in parts, the first edition in book form was published by Robert Tyas in 1840, with the present edition likely issued around the same time. Yellow endpages. Pages are starting to age tone. Some underlining and marginalia in volumes. Overall in VERY GOOD condition. One of the more interesting items for the Thackeray collector which includes descriptions written by him. Other contributors include Douglas Jerrold and Leigh Hunt. The illustrator Meadows was a prominent comic artist and was associated with Leech, Jerrold and Thackeray in formulating the idea of an English Charivari, and idea that Mayhew and Lemon expanded into Punch.
