Paperback. Condition: Very good. Paperback. 9" X 6". viii, 321pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners, and edges of pictorial paper wraps. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: There has been an increasing interest in the application of dynamical systems to the study of development over the last decade. The explosion of the dynamical systems framework in the physical and biological sciences has opened the door to a new Zeitgeist for studying development. This appeal to dynamical systems by developmentalists is natural given the intuitive links between the established fundamental problems of development and the conceptual and operational scope of nonlinear dynamical systems. This promise of a new approach and framework within which to study development has led to some progress in recent years but also a growing appreciation of the difficulty of both fully examining the new metaphor and realizing its potential. Divided into 4 parts, this book is a result of a recent conference on dynamical systems and development held at Pennsylvania State University. The first 3 parts focus on the content domains of development that have given most theoretical and empirical attention to the potential applications of dynamical systems--physical growth and movement, cognition, and communication. These parts show that a range of nonlinear models have been applied to a host of developmental phenomena. Part 4 highlights two particular methodological issues that hold important implications for the modeling of developmental phenomena with dynamical systems techniques.(Publisher).

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Individual Pathways of Change presents and applies cutting-edge time series analysis techniques for analyzing intra-individual change. Editors Peter C. M. Molenaar and Karl M. Newell demonstrate the practical benefits of intra-individual analysis by not only applying the new techniques to various learning or developmental problems, but also discussing implications for future applications. The techniques in this book cover each of Bartholomew's four classes of dynamic latent variable models, and they are presented and applied to a wide range of topics, such as measuring shifts between different psychological states, differences in responses and test scores, and time scales that are present in the growth or decay of learning processes. The editors emphasize innovative frameworks and reveal the limitations of using group between-subject analysis to derive inferences about psychological processes. Showcasing advanced time series techniques for tracking individual change, this work details how dynamic latent variable models uncover shifts in psychological states, test scores, and learning trajectories. It challenges traditional group approaches by emphasizing intra-individual analysis. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book focuses on a span of statistical topics relevant to researchers who seek to conduct person-specific analysis of human data. Our purpose is to provide one consolidated resource that includes techniques from disciplines such as engineering, physics, statistics, and quantitative psychology and outlines their application to data often seen in human research. The book balances mathematical concepts with information needed for using these statistical approaches in applied settings, such as interpretative caveats and issues to consider when selecting an approach. The statistical topics covered here include foundational material as well as state-of-the-art methods. These analytic approaches can be applied to a range of data types such as psychophysiological, self-report, and passively collected measures such as those obtained from smartphones. We provide examples using varied data sources including functional MRI (fMRI), daily diary, and ecological momentary assessment data.Features:Description of time series, measurement, model building, and network methods for person-specific analysisDiscussion of the statistical methods in the context of human researchEmpirical and simulated data examples used throughout the bookR code for analyses and recorded lectures for each chapter available at the book website: / Across various disciplines of human study, researchers are increasingly seeking to conduct person-specific analysis. This book provides comprehensive information, so no prior knowledge of these methods is required. We aim to reach active researchers who already have some understanding of basic statistical testing. Our book provides a comprehensive resource for those who are just beginning to learn about person-specific analysis as well as those who already conduct such analysis but seek to further deepen their knowledge and learn new tools. This book focuses on a span of statistical topics relevant to researchers who seek to conduct person-specific analysis of human data. The primary audience are students and researchers in psychometrics, quantitative psychology, psychophysiology and neurocognition. This book can be used for both teaching and research.
