Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book: Very Good (taking into account age and genre). Extremely rare 1929 first edition (NAP, identified by 'no additional printings'). Despite being an 87-year-old children's book it has held up pretty well. Take a look at the photographs. The front cover is quite clean although as you can see there are a number of small scuffs. The color illustration and lettering on the front and the lettering on the spine are still quite bright. Three of four corners have some rub-through. Two small spots on the front cover adjacent to the spine also have a tear in the cloth (first photo). The spine looks quite good, although there is a little bit of wear, a tiny tear, at the ends. The back has minor handling soiling but is otherwise in very good shape. Most importantly, the covers and pages are well bound. There is a small tear at the top of the inside cover, however not on the gutter between the pages. The pages are in very good condition. There are 13 full-page color illustrations, including the frontispiece, and many b&w illustrations as well. They all look terrific. There's no foxing anywhere in the book. The pages are in fact, quite clean, with only a dozen or so spots of soiling (of a fingerprinty kind) in the margins. You'll also find an occasional crease. There is no writing on any of the pages of the text or on any of the illustrations. There are penciled letters in some of the squares on the illustrated back of the rear end paper. And a previous owner did pen his name and address on the 'This Book Belongs To' page. There is also what looks like a penciled first name at the top right-hand corner of the same page, under which is written, also in pencil 'Illus by Lillian Govey', a name, according to my googling, that was a pseudonym for a J.L. Gilmour.
