Item Description: Toronto, ON: McClelland and Stewart ( M&S ), 1997, 1st edition, First Printing, Toronto, Ontario, 1997. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Photo Cover (illustrator). First Edition. -----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, signed and inscribed "To T_____ Merry Xmas '97 to a good HABS fan. Hope you enjoy my book. Best wishes Dick Irvin", 266 pages, b&w photos, ---"It’s the fourth game of the Eastern Conference playoffs, 1995. Alexei Kovalev of the Rangers is down, apparently unconscious. At the other end of the rink, the Nordiques star forward is rushing the net. Joe Sakic fans on the shot and Kovalev doesn’t move. Andy van Hellemond, the game’s most experienced referee, is somewhere in the middle, trying to decide what to do. Thinking that Sakic’s rush has failed and worried about the man who’s down, he blows his whistle. What he doesn’t know is that Sakic has somehow recaptured the puck and scored, and that Kovalev is about to get up and skate to the bench. But play has been stopped and the goal doesn’t count. The Rangers go on to win the game (in overtime) and then the series. Fortunately, not all calls are that tough. And, more often than not, the officials get them right. Most have endured a hard apprenticeship on their way to the big league. They have seen just about everything, from bench-clearing brawls to fish on the ice. They’re a savvy and tightly knit group. They have to be. They are connoisseurs of fights. Some remember when players fought with two hands, instead of grabbing the other guy with one hand while swinging the other. Some classic brawls are recalled in these pages. Gordie Howe ’s decisive battle with Lou Fontinato is described by the linesman who broke it up. Later, expansion-era brawls started by Philadelphia’s "Broad Street Bullies" are similarly recalled by officials who knew, at least, what they were in for when the puck was dropped. Following the formula that has worked so well in his previous books, Dick Irvin lets the referees and linesmen tell their own story. It’s not all about mayhem. Kerry Fraser reveals the secret of his perfect hairdo. Don Koharski explains what happened after New Jersey coach Jim Schoenfeld called him "a fat pig. - And Paul Stewart tells what it’s like to make the transition from refereed to referee. The stories in Tough Calls are as varied, colourful, funny, farfetched, and revealing as any collection of anecdotes ever brought together about the game of hockey, making this an indispensable addition to every fan’s library"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. Item Description: Lebanon, OH, 1984. unbound. American Astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Lebanon, Ohio, October 26, 1984. In this strongly-worded letter, Armstrong takes exception with the Editor of Guideposts, who decided to interview Armstrong's mother for an article that contained numerous errors, in part: "The story you referred to is certainly not my story. It was apparently based on an interview with my mother. After the story was originally brought to my attention, shortly after its publication, I asked my mother if she was responsible for the many errors of fact and misquotes in the article. She assured me she was not. It was unbelievable to me that Guideposts would print unverified quotations from a quarter century earlier. I could only conclude that policy and integrity of the magazine was akin to that of the National Enquirer. I am unable to think of any condition under which I would approve text or collaborate in any way with Guideposts." Note: Guideposts, a Christian faith-based publication, was started in 1945 by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. Natural folds; very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 264128

Item Description: The image of Armstrong was taken just prior to his historic 1969 flightIn 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation by establishing the goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Eight years later that goal was accomplished, when on the Apollo 11 mission Neil Armstrong, along with Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, took their capsule to the Moon, and Armstrong took the lunar module Eagle to the lunar surface and became the first man to walk on the Moon. Two statements of Armstrong's came to embody that accomplishment: "The Eagle has landed;" which announced the lunar module's landing on the Moon's surface; and "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken as his foot first touched the Moon. These are two of the most famous statements made by any American of any generation.Rogers started working for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1959 on the design and development of satellite systems. He worked in Advanced Programs during the Apollo years, and completed his career as a program director, and retired from NASA's Washington DC headquarters in 1981.Photograph signed of Neil Armstrong, an official NASA color portrait of Armstrong dresses in his astronaut uniform and holding his helmet, posing in front of the moon, measuring at 8 by 10 inches and inscribed to Donald Rogers.Armstrong frequently used autopen machines to sign letters and photographs, and so finding authentically signed photographs is uncommon. This is one of the great, iconic images of the American space era. Bookseller Inventory # 10583

Inscribed, dated and SIGNED by Armstrong to ffep to longtime Pan Am spokesman Jeff Kreindler: " 25pp. A largely technical discussion of the challenges posed by space flight and the development of the lunar module. Remarkably (or perhaps not given Armstrong's famed desire for privacy), WINGLESS represents the only separately published work from the first man to walk on the moon. Item Description: Swigert was a member of astronaut support for ArmstrongÕs Apollo 11 mission, and then flew on the famed and ill-fated Apollo 13An extraordinary rarity - the first signed photograph from one astronaut to another that we have seenTest pilot Neil Armstrong became an astronaut in 1962. He was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission in 1965, and was launched into space on March 16, 1966. Armstrong performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space. He was next chosen as spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission. Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the Moon and first to step on its surface. Two statements of Armstrong's came to embody that accomplishment: "The Eagle has landed;" which announced the Lunar Module's landing on the Moon's surface; and "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," spoken as his foot first touched the Moon. These are two of the most famous statements made by any American of any generation. Jack Swigert was one of the 19 astronauts selected by NASA in April 1966. He served as a member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 7 mission and then again for the historic Apollo 11 flight to the Moon. In this capacity he accompanied Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and others on the Sierra Blanca geology trip, which was undertaken to practice gathering rock specimens on the Moon. Swigert was next assigned to the Apollo 13 backup crew and subsequently called upon to replace prime crewman Thomas K. Mattingly as command module pilot. (The substitution was announced 72 hours prior to launch of the mission following Mattingly's exposure to the German measles.) Apollo 13, which flew from April 11-17, 1970, was devastated by an explosion in the command module, which was Swigert's ship, but the astronauts and Mission Control successfully worked together to nurse the ship back to Earth and bring the astronauts safely home. Swigert later resigned from NASA to make a run at politics. He successfully won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Colorado in 1982. He died, however, before he could take office. The official NASA color glossy 8 10 photograph of Armstrong in a suit and tie, taken in 1964 before he had flown in space, signed and inscribed to Swigert, ÒTo JackÑWith thanks for all your contributions as a member of the Apollo 11 team ÐNeil ArmstrongÓ. The verso bears purple NASA caption text and ÒKodak PaperÓ watermarks. This is a very attractive and uncommon signed photograph. It is accompanied by a glossy photograph of Swigert and another Apollo 11 support person, Bill Pogue, discussing a rock sample during the Sierra Blanca geology trip. This photograph was originated with SwigertÕs sister, who certified that it was one of SwigertÕs possessions. This is an extreme rarity - the first signed photograph from one astronaut to another that we have seen. That it is signed by Neil Armstrong is simply extraordinary. Bookseller Inventory # 11056

Item Description: 1969, 1969. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. THE MOST FAMOUS TELEPHONE CALL IN HISTORY. Gelatin silver print photograph. Approx 7 x 8 1/2 in, black and white. Signed by Nixon, Collins, Aldrin (adding “We came in peace for all mankind Apollo 11”) and Armstrong (“To Claude Harkins with best wishes Neil Armstrong”). Soon after stepping onto the moon, Armstrong and Aldrin spoke with President Nixon by telephone in what Nixon called “the most historic phone call ever made from the White House.” In his diary Nixon wrote, “The President held an interplanetary conversation with Apollo 11 Astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin on the Moon.” The split television screen image was broadcast by the television networks. Nixon’s chief of staff H. R. Haldeman noted that the president was elated by the moon landing, “clapped and shouted ‘Hooray’” when Armstrong stepped on the moon’s surface, and wrote his own remarks for the event. The following day Nixon reinstated his ban on the New York Times, “mainly due to Moon TV editorial which was uncalled for. The editorial berated the president for sharing the stage with the astronauts and wasting their precious time with his direct link conversation” (Haldeman Diaries). Signed by Author(s).
