First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Nichols, Kate - Design (illustrator). First Edition Stated. 109 Pages Indexed. This is the First Perennial Edition released in 2003. From one of the South's foremost historians, this is the dramatic story of the conflict in South Carolina that was one of the most pivotal contributions to the American Revolution. In 1779, Britain strategised a war to finally subdue the rebellious American colonies with a minimum of additional time, effort, and blood. Setting sail from New York harbour with 8,500 ground troops, a powerful British fleet swung south towards South Carolina. One year later, Charleston fell. And as King George's forces pushed inland and upward, it appeared the six-year-old colonial rebellion was doomed to defeat. In a stunning work on forgotten history, acclaimed historian Walter Edgar takes the American Revolution far beyond Lexington and Concord to re-create the pivotal months in a nation's savage struggle for freedom. It is a story of military brilliance and devastating human blunders - and the courage of an impossibly outnumbered force of demoralised patriots who suffered terribly at the hands of a merciless enemy, yet slowly gained confidence through a series of small triumphs that convinced them their war could be won. Alive with incident and colour.

Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "What began fifty yeaars ago as a deadly cat-and-mouse game between wild-hare moonshine runners and grim old sheriffs on the twisting back roads of the southern Appalachians has evolved into the hottesst sport in America: NASCAR's Winston Cup Series. The drivers aren't exactly good old boys anymore and the corporatization of stock car racing has turned NASCAR into a miltimillion-dollar enterprise, but the irreverent roots of the sport cannot be denied. In Wheels, critically acclaimed writer Paul Hemphill tells the story of this fascinating sport through the events of the 1996 Winston Cup season. When Tom Wolfe immortalized NASCAR's legendary Junior Johnson as "The Last American Hero," the sport's beginnings were revealed: Young men, between bouts of hauling whiskey and trying to elude the law, turned their misdoings into a sport of fearless daredevils in lightning-fast cars competing at dirt tracks all over the South. But when Junior convinced tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds to sponsor the NASCAR circuit, stock car racing changed forever. In Wheels, Paul Hemphill explores this transformation and, in doing so, takes the reader on an unparalleled journey through the multifaceted world that is stock car racing: into the corporate offices, where public relations gurus teach the drivers how to address the media after a victory or how to speak to the camera in a commercial; to the races, where a split second's reaction time often spells the difference between disaster and victory; to the busy garages where grease monkeys tinker with 700 horsepower engines in order to get an edge on the competition; and into the infields of the tracks where southern boys and their ladies whoop it up, drink beer, and hoot and holler for their favorite drivers and cars. Hemphill further profiles the drivers themselves: the mean, all-business Dale Earnhardt - the Intimidator - perhaps the greatest NASCAR driver of all time; the preppy twenty-five year-old Christain wunderkind, Jeff Gordon - the Kid - the blossoming Madison Avenue-approved future of the sport; Terry Labonte, the solid, soft-spoken driver whose consistent top-five finishes earned him enough points to capture the coveted season-long Winston Cup Championship; and many of the others from similar blue-collar backgrounds, fighting for a piece of the purse that could make or break their entire season. Yet Wheels is also about a lot more than just racing. It's about a culture, a personality; it's about the last gasps of a distinct regional identity faced with the sanitizing influences of corprate America. Simply put, Wheels is a chronicle of Buba's last stand." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Kate Nichols (Text drawings) and Jessica Griffin ( (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. xvii, 365, [1] pages. Illustrations. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Inscription reads 2018 For Mark French with Respect! Michael. With a Foreword by David Axelrod. Michael Andrew Smerconish, (born March 15, 1962) is an American radio host and television presenter, political commentator, author, and lawyer. A self-described "lifelong Republican" and former GOP administration appointee, he left the Republican party during the Obama administration. He hosts a morning radio show, The Michael Smerconish Program, on the POTUS Channel on SiriusXM, and a CNN and CNN International program on Saturdays. He is a former Sunday columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer and has written seven books, including six non-fiction works and one novel. He serves of counsel to Kline & Specter, a Philadelphia law firm. After graduating from Penn Law School, Smerconish was appointed, at age 29, by the George H. W. Bush administration to serve as regional administrator of Philadelphia Region III for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under Secretary Jack Kemp. In 1993, Smerconish began what would become a decade practicing law with legendary trial attorney James E. Beasley, who would become the benefactor and eponym of the Temple University Beasley School of Law. In 2003, after the firing of Don Imus, whose morning drive slot he took, did Smerconish become a talk show host who was a lawyer instead of a lawyer who was a talk show host. Opinionated talk show host and columnist Michael Smerconish has been chronicling local, state, and national events for the Philadelphia Daily News and the Philadelphia Inquirer for more than 15 years. He has sounded off on topics as diverse as the hunt for Osama bin Laden and what the color of your Christmas lights says about you. In this collection of 100 of his most memorable columns, Smerconish reflects on American political life with his characteristic feistiness. A new Afterword for each column provides updates on both facts and feelings, indicating how the author has evolved over the years, moving from a reliable Republican voter to a political Independent. Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right covers the post-9/11 years, Barack Obama's ascension, and the rise of Donald Trump. Smerconish describes meeting Ronald Reagan, having dinner with Fidel Castro, barbecuing with the band YES in his backyard, spending the same night with Pete Rose and Ted Nugent, drinking champagne from the Stanley Cup, and conducting Bill Cosby's only pretrial interview. He also writes about local Philadelphia culture, from Sid Mark to the Rizzo statue. Smerconish's outlook as expressed in these impassioned opinion pieces goes beyond liberal or conservative. His thought process continues to evolve and change, and as it does, he aims to provoke readers to do the same.
