First edition of this serious critique of the Jesuits in India by Père Norbert, a Capuchin missionary who served in Pondichery. [12], 201, [1], XVI pp.Second (or third?) edition of the funeral oration for the sinologist and mathematician Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737), by Father Norbert of Bar-le-Duc (1703-1769), dedicated to Pope Benedict XIV. The oration prooved highly important in the so-called "Struggle of the rites" in China between the Jesuit missionaries and the Chinese emperor and the Pope. The author of the oration, (Norbert de Bar-le-Duc, a Capuchin monk (1716) and priest (1729) also known as Norbert de Lorraine, Curé Pierre Parisot or Abbé Platel, was sent to Malabar and later to Pondicherry in December 1736 after being appointed procurator of the French mission. He stayed for three years in Pondicherry, where he soon came into conflict with the Jesuits on the same issue - "the struggle of the (now Malabaric) rites" -which had lead to Visdelou s exile in the same Capuchin monastery in the same town. So the anti-Jesuit Father Norbert de Bar-le-Duc understandably delivered Visdelou s funeral oration .An undated 4to edition that names no printer or place of printing appears to be the first edition of the funeral oration. Sommervogel and Cordier mention an 8vo edition nominally printed by Antoine Pereira in Cadiz (though other sources suggest it was printed in Avignon), with the same collation as our edition and published in the same year, making the present edition the second or third.Fine copy, with bookplate on inside front cover: ''Devie, Prêtre''. 12. Lisbone ( Lisboa ) , chez François-Louis Ameno , 1761 - 1766, 7 vols in-4°, 25 x 19,5 cm (format of vol. I) ; 27 x 21 cm (format of other vols). Ex-library copy with some stamps , uncut copies, some pages a bit browned , a few pages with waterstains. Bound in half cloth with marbled boards, a rather shabby set. The entire edition should contain 9 engravings. In our copy 5 are missing ( mostly portraits). The map of Malabar and Coromandel is present. This is a rare book containing a vicious attack on the Jesuit order and especially their missiological activities. The first two volumes deal with exclusively with the Jesuit Mission in Malabar. The third volume expounds on the animosity between Jesuits and Capuchins. The author was a capuchin and in this volume he declares to have changed his name for fear of being murdered by the Jesuits . Volumes IV treats the '' Malabar Rite''. Volume V describes the ''rebellion'' of the Jesuits against Pope Benedict XIV. At the end of this volume and continued in volume VI and VII are published the letters by the Jesuits written from their Missions in China, Japan and India in which they respond to the accusations and in which they defend their policies regarding their missiological enterprises. Almost all the letters are in Latin but a French or Italian translation is provided for in the text. The author ends his work with the wish that a papal bull might abolish the Jesuit order. In 1773 his wish was fullfilled and this book played certainly a large part herein.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An extremely rare edition of this invective against the Jesuits, published in Lisbon where the action to abolish the Jesuit order begun and was accomplished in Rome on 21 July 1773. Printed in 1761 - 1766, 7 vols in-4. But they are incomplete as there are 2 copies of volume N.6 and is missing the Vol. N.4. Possibly some engravings are also missing and for volume N.7 there are bookworms tunneling partially but not damaging the text. Yellowing and browning on some pages. Ex-library copy with some stamps. Great leather binding with gold gilding, the volumes (each independent from the others for the subject) are coming from the Portuguese Royal library, there are stamps on each frontispiece. This is a diabolic set of books containing a vicious attack on the Jesuit order and especially their missions in Asia and the Far East. THE SLANDERING ATTACK CARRIED OUT WITH THESE BOOKS CAUSED IMPRISONMENT AND DEATH FOR THOUSANDS OF GOOD PRIESTS OF THE JEASUIT ORDER. THE ACTUAL POPE FRANCIS IS A JESUIT. The first two volumes deal exclusively with the Jesuit Mission in Malabar. The third volume expounds on the animosity between Jesuits and Capuchins. The author was a capuchin and in this volume, he declares to have changed his name for fear of being murdered by the Jesuits! Volumes IV treats the '' Malabar Rite''. Volume V describes the ''rebellion'' of the Jesuits against Pope Benedict XIV. At the end of this volume and continued in volume VI and VII have published the letters by the Jesuits written from their Missions in China, Japan, and India in which they respond to the accusations and in which they defend their policies regarding their missiological enterprises. Almost all the letters are in Latin but a French or Italian translation is provided for in the text. The author ends his work with the wish that a papal bull might abolish the Jesuit order. In 1773 his wish was fulfilled and this book played a huge part in it. What seems the only portrait of De Tournon, is in this set (see picture) he died in prison in Macao, China, and his negative actions still reverberate with a very negative role in the distancing between China and the West, up to our days. THE JESUITS WERE STRONGLY AGAINST THE ILLUMINATI AND THE FREEMASONS, THIS MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THEIR DEMISE.

Condition: Bueno. 2nd edition. 20x25. 7 vols. Vol. I: 5 + 7 + 4 + 75 + xxx + 456 + xl pp. portrait of Joseph I, Roi de Portugal by M. François, after Mme. François, folding map of Malabar and Coromandel (southern India) (lacking engraved portait of Pope Benedict XIV); vol. II: 543 + xvi pp., engraved portrait of P. Robert Nobili de la Marche d'Ancone, Jesuit missionary in India; vol. III: (4 +) xi + 676pp.; vol. IV: (4 +) xii + 639pp., engravings of Wischtnu (Vishnu) and Isuren (Shiva), (lacking engraved plate of "Biruma ou Bramma" (Brahma); vol V: xvi + 646pp. (erroneously printed as 446), engraved portrait of Cardinal Tournon; vol VI: (4 +) xi + 681pp.; vol. VII: (2 +) 2+ vii + 455pp. The author of this extremely hostile history of the Jesuits is the French Capuchin missionary Pierre-Curel Parisot, (1697 - 1769). In 1736 he was was sent to Malabar and later to Pondicherryas Procurator of the French mission and here here conflicted with the Jesuits over the use of the Malabaric rites. On his return to France, his own order turned against him, forcing to go into exile in England, where he opened a Turkish carpt factory in Paddington. The first two volumes recount the history of the Jesuit missions in southern India. Volume III lists the offenses of the Jesuits, touching on their missions in Paraguay, India the Philipines and Canada. In volume IV the author (in third person, as Père Norbert) recounts his battles with the Jesuits in India and France; beautiful engravings of Vishnu and Shiva would appear to be among the earliest western depictions of the Hindu gods. Volume V, the turbulant relations between the Jesuits and the papacy. Volume VI, papal legate Charles de Tournon and the Jesuit missions in China (letters from missionaries in Latin and French). Volume VII, the Jesuits in China (letters from missionaries in Latin and French). Palau (228631) incorrectly dates the edition as 1776. The edition, in French, was published in Lisbon due to Portugal's position as the first European nation (and empire) to supress the Order of Jesus in 1759; by the time it was published, however, the Order had been suppressed in France since 1764. Vol. I., worming in the first half of the volume., ; Vol. II, rodent damage in the lower margin of the first 30 leaves; vol. V, marginal wormhole pp. 177 - 309, pp. 400 - end; Vol. VII, rodent damage in the upper margin of the last 55 leaves. The leather binding of the seven vols. in various states of disrepair. We have attempted to describe the many defects of this set, and it is far from being a good copy. It is, however, complete (apart from the two missing plates), the worming has been treated, so is no longer active (our photos show its greatest extension), and where the volumes are noot affected by the aforementioned defects, the paper is crisp and clean.
