About this Item: Pierre Rigaud, Lyon, 1604. Softcover. Condition: Good. A GOOD, ENTIRELY UNSOPHISTICATED COPY 8vo. Two parts in one. pp. 125 (iii) : 78 (ii) (with both blanks). Roman letter, some Italic. Woodcut printer’s device on both titles, floriated woodcut initials and woodcut headpieces. Light age browning and occasional (poor quality paper), minor marginal water-staining in places. A good, entirely unsophisticated copy in contemporary limp vellum. Charming popular edition of the prophecies of Nostradamus printed by Pierre Rigaud, a deliberate copy of the earliest editions, printed at Lyon by the same family, here without date (later editions by Rigaud were printed with false earlier dates); it is one of the earliest editions of the first revival of interest in Nostradamus, in the early C17th. The first part contains the famous dedication to his son and the second his dedication to Henry II. The work was originally published in three parts, the first containing 353 poems. The second part was printed in 1557 and added 289 further prophecies; the third and final part of 300 new poems was printed in 1558, posthumously, as part of the ‘works’ published by Pierre Rigaud Sr. These poems or rhymed quatrains were grouped into nine sets of 100 and one of 42, called "Centuries". Nostradamus claimed each prediction was based upon his astrological reading of particular events, though it is evident that a great deal of the work is copied from earlier Latin authors such as Livy, Plutarch, and other classical historians, and many are taken directly from Richard Roussat’s Livre de l’estat et mutations des temps (1549–1550). The Mirabilis Liber of 1522, which contained a wide range of prophecies by such authors as Pseudo-Methodius, the Tiburtine Sibyl, Joachim of Fiore, Savonarola and others was also a well used source. His considerable initial success was based on the fact that he was one of the first to re-paraphrase these prophecies in French. Further material was gleaned from the De honesta disciplina of 1504 by Petrus Crinitus, which included extracts from Michael Psellos’s De daemonibus, and the De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum, a book on Chaldean and Assyrian magic by Iamblichus, a fourth-century Neo-Platonist. Most of the quatrains deal with disasters, such as plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, invasions, murders, droughts, and battles—all undated and based on foreshadowings by the Mirabilis Liber. The work was remarkably popular and has been reprinted over two hundred times since its first appearance. Popular modern interpretations of the quatrains have shown them to predict the French Revolution, Napoleon, Hitler, the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and even the death of princess Diana and the events of 9/11. An important contemporary theme was fear of an impending invasion of Europe by Muslim forces, headed by the expected Antichrist, directly reflecting the Ottoman invasions of the Balkans. The work was published within the context of a general fear of an imminent apocalypse. A rare and charming popular edition. Not in BM STC Fr. C16th. Lyon VI, p. 215, Pierre I Rigaud, 49. Caillet 8068. Not in Cantamessa. French. Seller Inventory # L1702

The true prophecies or prognostications of Michael: NOSTRADAMUS, Michael

About this Item: Thomas Ratcliffe and Nathaniel Thompson, London, 1672. Title in red and black. Without the frontispiece portrait, missing in about half the copies extant. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with red morocco label; some leaves browned and foxed, otherwise a sound copy with the book label of Stewart of Glassertoun. First edition in English of the book of prophecies of Nostradamus, first printed in French in 1555 under the title Les propheties. It was originally done in three installments, the first containing 353 quatrains, or four-line poems. The second installment, containing 289 further quatrains, was printed in 1557, while the third installment of 300 new quatrains was printed in 1558, but apparently only survives as part of the "works" which was published after his death. Each quatrain is a prediction of future events, which Nostradamus claimed was based upon astrological assessment of the quality of an occurrence such as a birth, death, wedding, etc. Much of the work, especially the more dramatic prophecies, apparently paraphrase the endeavors of earlier writers such as Livy, Plutarch, and other classical historians. Many of his astrological references are taken almost word for word from Richard Roussat's Livre de l'estat et mutations des temps (1549-1550).One of his major prophetic sources was evidently the Mirabilis Liber of 1522, which contained a range of prophecies by Pseudo-Methodius, the Tiburtine Sibyl, Joachim of Fiore, Savonarola and others. Nostradamus was one of the first to re-paraphrase these prophecies in French, which may explain why they are credited to him. Further material was gleaned from the De honesta disciplina of 1504 by Petrus Crinitus, which included extracts from Michael Psellos's De daemonibus, and the De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum, a book on Chaldean and Assyrian magic by Iamblichus, a fourth-century Neo-Platonist.Most of the quatrains deal with disasters, such as plagues, earthquakes, wars, floods, invasions, murders, droughts, and battles-all undated and based on foreshadowings by the Mirabilis Liber. Some quatrains cover these disasters in overall terms; others concern a single person or small group of people. Some cover a single town, others several towns in several countries. A major, underlying theme is an impending invasion of Europe by Muslim forces from further east and south headed by the expected Antichrist, directly reflecting the then-current Ottoman invasions and the earlier Saracen equivalents, as well as the prior expectations of the Mirabilis Liber. All of this is presented in the context of the supposedly imminent end of the world. Seller Inventory # 14338

Les Pléiades du Sieur de Chavigny, Beaunois,: CHAVIGNY, Jean Aimé

About this Item: Pierre Rigaud, Lyon, 1607. ______ Format : In-8. [167 x 104 mm] Collation : (18), 626, (6) pp. Reliure : Maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs, tranches dorées. (Reliure du XIXe, Petit, succ. Simier). (note à la plume du XIXe). Benazra, Répertoire chronologique nostradamique pp. 168. Brunet 1, 1828. Très bel exemplaire. *-------* It is a collection of seven prophecies - as the seven stars of the Pleiades - published for the first time in 1603. They are discussed in relation to the events of the sixteenth century and compared with Nostradamus' prophecies. Jean Aimé Chavigny, (Beaune, 1524-1604) Doctor of Law and Theology, a disciple of Nostradamus, was his oldest commentator. The discourse "parenetique" which is mentioned on the title was published separately, with its own title page and pagination. Therefore, it "is not in all copies" as Brunet says, which is the case of this copy and the one in Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Provenance: Ex-Libris of Lebers, member of the Society of the history of Normandy." (nineteenth century handwritten note). Benazra, Répertoire chronologique nostradamique pp. 168. Brunet, Manuel du libraire 1, 1828. Very nice copy. Seller Inventory # 12670

It apparently was left out in the printing of this edition. This is usually taken to refer to "The War of the Three Henrys" [Guerre des trois Henri - Valois, Bourbon et Guise]. Small 8vo. 170 cm. Modern full blue leather binding, with raised bands. The original French marbled endpapers are preserved. Michel de Nostredame (1503-1566), usually Latinized to Nostradamus, was a French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of prophecies that have since become famous world-wide. He is best known for this book Les Propheties, which first appeared in 1555. The book has rarely been out of print since his death. All the early editions are very idiosyncratic and deserving of study. Nostradamus attracted an enthusiastic following who, along with the popular press, credit him with predicting many major world events. Interest in the work of this prominent figure of the French Renaissance is still considerable, especially in the media and in popular culture, and the prophecies have in some cases been assimilated to the results of applying the alleged Bible Code, as well as to other purported prophetic works. Tagli spruzzati. Elegante legatura in pelle, contropiatti in carta marmorizzata. Fregi tipografici xilografici. Fioriture usuali. Minime mancanze all'angolo inferiore esterno delle pp. 7-10. Buona copia nell'insieme. Baudrier, XI, p. 351. Chomarat, 198. Una copia in SBN / ICCU, all'Estense di Modena. Francese. Seller Inventory # 43746

About this Item: J. Oursel, 1691. Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. (Benazara, 2701; Chomarat, 276 ; Caillet, 8081) The book opens with two title pages: an edition at Paris by Oursel circa 1691 (1649 according to Caillet) with a magnificent representation of Nostradamus on reverse side, an anonymous undated edition at Avignon with a woodcut on the title page inspired by Florent Crox (Almanach pour 1570, Paris, Houic). The pagination is thus complicated: t., t, 3 ff. without numbering (Life of Nostradamus), 1 f. w.n. (woodcut representing the death of the King of England and the Fire of London, woodcut representing Henry II overleaf), 12 pp. (Curious remarks on the Centuries Michel Nostradamus by a learned man of that time), 133 pp. (The True Centuries and Prophecies of Michel Nostradamus), 1 f. w.n. (Woodcut representing Henry IV), 12 pp. (Other predictions of Mr. Nostradamus for years currents in this century by Vincent Sève). Copy of Dr. Ernest Bonnejoy (1833-1896), a founder of the Vegetarian Society of France, who commissioned this beautiful full rigid vellum binding with gilt framing on the covers, gilt monogram B crowned on the top on front cover. His bookplate on the reverse of the last cover (B1459). (Benazara, 2701; Chomarat, 276 ; Caillet, 8081). Seller Inventory # ABE-15014644231

About this Item: Chez Pierre Promé, 1669. Couverture rigide. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition Binders in half bsane hazel with small corners ca 1800. Smooth back decorated with rollers. Title piece in red morocco. Upper bit tightly split. Blunt corners. (24) 206pp. (2). Seller Inventory # 62608
