The author has attempted to demonstrate that polygamy in Contla has a social and economic function, regardless of any religious, ritual or ceremonial activities of the polygynous family. While the main function of polygyny is social--it provides unmarried, divorce or widowed women with an opportunity to marry--the general context in which such unions are stablished is primarily economic. First edition. Roberts was intrigued by problems that seemed too "messy" to most social scientists and not easily amenable to systematic data gathering, quantification, or rigorous analysis. Thus, although experimental in his approach, his work was largely in relation to subjects where carefully controlled experiments were often impossible and where the kinds of cultural and societal data available were far from adequate for controlled comparison. Creative in this as in other respects, Roberts relied on the approach that examines an idea in relation to several independent lines of evidence, where National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. First edition. Based on research conducted during the past twenty years on superordinate stratification in Mexico City and the class system of several cities, this article has three goals. First, it establishes the historical origins of ethnic categories that began strictly as racial categories in the sixteenth century. Second, it describes the main ethnic sectors of contemporary Mexican society, their class composition, and the principles of social mobility. Third, it analyzes interclass and interethnic relations and the cultural and racial perceptions they engender. The generalizations of (1) apply to the entire country, whereas those of (2) and (3) characterize central Mexico (from Oaxaca to Jalisco and from coast to coast). Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 39-54 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (10" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume XXXIX Number 1 complete issue. First edition. Evangelical Christianity is Mexico's fastest-growing religious movement, with about ten million adherents today. Most belong to Protestant denominations introduced from the United States (e.g., Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh-day Adventists), but perhaps as many as 800,000 are members of homegrown, "native" evangelical sects. These native Mexican sects share much with the American denominations of which they are spinoffs. For instance, they are Trinitarian, Anabaptist, and Millenarian; they emphasize a personal relationship with God, totally rejecting intermediation by saints; and they insist that they are the only true Christians. Beyond that, each native sect has its distinctive characteristics. Condition: Light edge wear with bumped corners, head page ends soiled else very good.

First edition. In this paper the author demonstrates the existence in the Nahuatl-speaking area of a uniliteral organization in which the barrio is synonymous with a semi localized, patriarchal, exogamous clan. In order to provide a basis for understanding the significance of clans in the Nahuatl-speaking area and the implications of their presence there the author thought it necessary to include a summary of the distribution of unilateral organization in Mesoamerica.
