Item Description: Abiquiu, 1971. No Binding. Book Condition: Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. O'KEEFFE, GEORGIA. (1887-1986). Popular and prolific American painter known for her sun-bleached cattle skulls, flowers and desert horizons. TDS. ("G. OK" and "Georgia O'Keeffe"). 1 2/3 pp. 4to. Abiquiu, August 27, 1971. To her sister, Anita O'Keeffe Young. "This will confirm conversations between us regarding my paintings owned by you (see List A) and my paintings lent to you by me (see Lists B and C). As to those paintings owned by you (see List A), you agree upon your death by last will and testament or other undertaking to cause these paintings to go to the institutions designated on List A. I would like you to make it a condition of such a gift that these institutions may not lend these paintings, except for once in twenty years. I would also like you to ask that the O'Keeffe frame which I have designed (silver or metal) be kept on these paintings, unless the institution wishes to show them without any frame at all. Such agreement on your part so to dispose of these paintings in no way restricts your right to sell them during your lifetime in case you are in personal need. As to those paintings loaned by me to you. set forth on Lists B and C, we have agreed between us that you may retain these paintings during your lifetime, even though I may predecease you, unless the provisions in my will concerning this do not hold. If you agree with the foregoing, please sign and initial both pages of the carbon copy of this letter and return it to me as soon as possible. Very truly yours." O'Keeffe was the first daughter born into a family of seven children and was sent, with the rest of her sisters, to receive an art education near their home in Wisconsin. Georgia's superior abilities, however, prompted her parents to enroll her into Chicago's Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York, where she settled. Drawn to the New Mexican desert, which inspired her artistically and spiritually, she discovered in 1931 the small village of Abiquiu, located about an hour from Santa Fe, where she purchased an adobe hacienda in 1945. After the death of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico and continued to paint the austere landscapes, sun-bleached bones, churches, and flowers for which she became so well known. O'Keeffe's sister Anita was a society hostess and philanthropist married to the financier and industrialist Robert R. "Railroad" Young. The wealthy couple maintained lavish residences in Palm Beach, New York and Newport, mentioned in our letter, and counted among their friends the stylish Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Their daughter was Eleanor "Cookie" Young, the first so-called "glamour debutante" of the 1930s. Our letter is accompanied by photocopies of Lists A, B and C, detailing the paintings owned by and lent to Mrs. Young, including works entitled Jimson Weed, Winter Cottonwoods East V, Calla Lilies on Red, Abstraction - White Rose III, and Red Hills and White Flower. Next to each listed work is the corresponding insurance value, year, media, dimensions (in some cases), and public institution for which it was intended. The institutions mentioned include the National Gallery of Art, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Despite her own careful planning, O'Keeffe's will was contested because of codicils added to benefit Juan Hamilton, a young potter who had become her companion late in life. The resulting court proceedings set new legal precedents in the field of estate planning with large portions of her estate going to Santa Fe's Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Very darkly initialed and signed in O'Keeffe's flowing, baroque hand. Folded with staple holes in the upper left corner and with the original envelope. In very good condition. An unusual document detailing O'Keeffe's plans for her artistic legacy. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. Additional postage may be necessary. Signed by Author(s). Item Description: Atlantis Editions, New York, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. FIRST EDITION. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 20 PRESENTATION COPIES (out of a total edition of 120), signed by O'Keeffe and the book's designer Leonard Baskin. AN EXTRAORDINARY COPY: Given by O'Keeffe's long-time agent Doris Bry to her friend and noted psychiatrist Dr. Lucie Jessner. With letters from Bry to Jessner discussing O'Keeffe's health and the origins of this book, with proofs of the pre-publication text and proof photos for some of the plates in the book. In a typed signed letter in this collection dated December 1, 1972, Doris Bry writes to Lucie Jessner about the origins of this book, "Some Memories of Drawings": "You probably don't remember -- but when I did the big O'K Drawings portfolio (which you have) -- and which has ten drawings -- I also intended to do a second volume of another ten -- which I never did -- and probably will never be able to do. -- But I also wanted to do a little and inexpensive paperback of the 20 drawings available to anyone -- with perhaps a little something by O'K about them -- and a one page biography and bibliography in the back -- well designed and well printed, etc. -- about 8 x 6 or 6 x 5" -- something like that. "Now O'K has given me her comments -- text for the first ten -- she forgot about the second ten -- and I enclose a Xerox [included here]. -- If it isn't imposing on you, I'd be interested in your reaction -- if you have time to react. (This is text for the ten you have) "I feel one needs 20 to make a booklet that can be bound neatly -- and that ten doesn't work physically -- also it would be interesting if she would do another ten. "This was just given to me as a fait accompli -- we did not talk about it or work on it -- Some of the material under I (the first two pages of her text) -- she has said to me at times somewhat differently -- and perhaps better -- and I am tempted to try to get her to expand it a little -- but then I also think it might be best just to take it as it is. -- "as a reader would you be interested in this little book? or is it too sparse? or???" In 1973, Bry did succeed in getting the book produced and the result is a masterful collection of drawings O'Keeffe created between 1915 and 1963; illustrated with 21 charcoal and pencil drawings reproduced on Arches Silkscreen in 300-line screen offset lithography, each laid into a lettered folded leaf of Arches paper. Most drawings are accompanied by O'Keeffe's commentary -- her first writing intended for book publication -- explaining the details, setting, or inspiration for each work. Elegantly designed by Leonard Baskin and printed at The Meadows Press. Also noteworthy in Bry's letters is a discussion of O'Keeffe's health, specifically her battle with macular degeneration, which began to strip O'Keeffe of her central vision in 1972. In an autograph letter dated May 8, 1972, Bry writes: "Much is quite terrible -- beyond words -- and then O'K remarkable and just acts, insofar as possible -- as if she can see. -- But the problem that it doesn't seem to stay static, but all worsens weekly for her rather inexorably." In her December 1, 1972 letter, she notes: "I was glad to see O'K -- which I hadn't since early May -- as she seemed very much better in many ways than then. -- Generally in better health, better spirits (quite cheerful actually) -- and I did not have that terrible sense I had last spring of desperation and fatigue and tension which really worried me so much. -- She says her eyes are no better, though I feel from things she sees and says unconsciously that she is seeing more, and so does everyone around her. -- but she says it is that she has adapted to it. -- And yet I hope things will change for the better somehow. -- Her courage and attitude are remarkable -- and somehow I think she will find some way of painting again some time -- though she says not. -- but she does now begin to think of writing, using the little tape recorder -- so I hope something will come of this, and certainly encouraged it." Item Description: np, Abiquiu, 1956. Book Condition: Fine. FIRST EDITION. LARGE GELATIN SILVER PRINT of one of Karsh's most iconic images, signed by Karsh in ink on border. "When Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) traveled to Abiquiu to photograph O'Keeffe in 1956, he. produced an image that suggested her self-assurance and reflected her artistic concerns. Seated in profile in the entryway of her house, O'Keeffe posed under a large set of antlers that appeared in many of her paintings. Karsh wrote that he 'expected to find some of the poetic intensity of her paintings reflected in her personality. Intensity I found, but it was the austere intensity of dedication to her work, which has led Miss O'Keeffe to cut out of her life anything that interferes with her ability to express herself in paint.' As Stieglitz had done in his portraits of the young O'Keeffe, Karsh drew attention to the artist's hands. But for his image of the sixty-nine year old artist, he posed her bent fingers next to a gnarled tree stump and placed her under a deer's skull, alluding to the passage of time and death. As if to balance those dark elements, however, a streak of light coming in from the open doorway falls on O'Keeffe's forehead, wrist, and still-life objects in the composition, serving as a reminder of the inspiration and vitality of the still-practicing artist. According to Karsh, his photograph once hung in her house at Abiquiu" (Susan Danly, "Miss O'Keeffe", Photography and Fame). Size: 20x16 inches (photograph); 29x24 inches (framed). Photograph taken in 1956; printed later (c.1980). Gelatin silver print, signed in ink by Karsh on border, mounted, framed. A large, stunning image in fine condition. Bookseller Inventory # 1619
