The bottom edge has smaller pieces missing at the right corner tip and the left corner. There is a 1 1/2 inch tear along the edge of the cover page. None of the other pages have tears at the edge. Most plates have foxing ranging from light to moderate. The majority of the foxing is in the margins. Overall the plates are very nice and the foxing condition is not a significant distraction. The spine covering is present but broken and frayed at the top and bottom.

This is not the case with the four 12 plate books. ~ Condition . I would rate the books as in Good condition. The covers of both books are in Poor condition. The covers of Vol I are complete but worn and stained. The crepe paper is rolling over at the edges and there are numerous tears and creases, primarily along the edges. The covers on Vol II are in Fair (bad) condition. The front cover is complete but has considerable staining, creasing and tears. Additionally, the crepe paper is rolling over at the edges. The back cover is in tatters with pieces missing. The preliminary blank pages of Vol II have water staining. Internally the books are in Good+ condition. The collotype plates are clean and free of problems in the image area. Each book features 12 hand colored collotypes of 19th century life and customs of Japan which show people in daily occupations and activities. The images in these books focus on people rather than scenery or sights. Each image has a caption and most have an informative narrative paragraph below the image. Descriptions/captions were provided by S. Takashima, Professor in the Higher Commercial College. Many of the early photographs in these "foreign" publications came from the studio of Ogawa Kazumasa who was also a printer and publisher. He had learned English and the craft of photomechanical printing in Boston. Returning to Japan in 1884, he opened his first studio in Tokyo the next year. At the time, it seems that there were few, if any, Japanese photo publications and most were made for Western consumption.
