Quarto, brown cloth (hardcover), gilt letters and illustration to upper cover, 172 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. With plate and publisher's letter laid-in. From dust jacket: William S. Phillips is a triple threat in the aviation art world. Not only is he a painter who can portray aircraft with exemplary precision, but he can also place that aircraft in a panorama that rivals the work of the finest landscape artist. To top it all off, he is a master of in-flight action; his detailed, soaring work communicates the glory of flight. In The Art of William S. Phillips: The Glory of Flight, you will join this experienced artist and aviator on the flights of his life. Phillips' paintings of the great aircraft depicted in this book give you the experiences of an eyewitness in ways that photography never could. From the thrill of liftoff, the speed of low-level flying, the power of high-level bombing, and the danger of a dogfight, to the extraordinary exhilaration of just flying, William Phillips is your copilot. Through the text of Smithsonian and National Geographic writer Ted Park and rare archival photographs, you'll meet some of the top pilots and war aces. And through the paintings and accompanying sketches by Bill Phillips, you can experience air travel like never before. The finest reproduction possible is supervised by the artist to fill these pages with more than eighty full-color pieces of art, plus sketches and drawings direct from Phillips' personal sketchbooks. In addition, there are two three-page fold-outs, to communicate the sensation of flying as no other book can. "In my work, I hope to convey the beauty and exhilaration of flight," says Phillips. "The historical subjects, I research. The contemporary subjects, I live." Take off with The Art of William S. Phillips: The Glory of Flight. Aviation, Art, Illustrated. zslic.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. A bright and fine folio size volume in pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated with more than 80 full-color pieces of art from one of the finest artists in the aviation art world. Laid in is the publisher's card and a print of an original pencil sketch, Escort to Wau. What makes this book quite special and historically significant are the signatures on the double page painting of the Enola Gay. The Enola Gay, a B-29 Superfortress, dropped the world's first atomic bomb ever used in combat on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The Enola Gay was named after the mother of the pilot, Paul Tibbets. This copy has been SIGNED BY FOUR MEMBERS OF THE ENOLA GAY: General Paul W. Tibbets, Pilot; Major Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk, Navigator; Tom Ferebee, Bombadier; and Dick Nelson, Operator. Quite possibly one of only a few copies thus signed. A bright and fine copy in dust jacket. [also see our listing for "Flight of the Enola Gay" signed by pilot Paul W. Tibbets] Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Signed.
