This book is the story of Haywood Patterson, one of the nine Negro boys arrested in 1931 and charged with the rape of two young white women. Patterson was tried in Alabama four time, three times sentenced to death and the fourth to 75 years in prison.In 1948, Patterson escaped from prison and fled to Detroit. He was arrested by the FBI a few years later but was not extradited to Alabama. After a deadly bar fight he was again sentenced to prison where he soon died of cancer at the age of thirty-nine.[1][3]In 2013, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles posthumously pardoned Patterson along with two other Scottsboro boys, Charles Weems and Andy Wright. They were the last men whose convictions had not yet been overturned or pardoned. The paperback edition was published in 1951, only a year before Patterson died. This book was previously owned by the renowned actor, Theodore Bikel. He signed his name with the date on the first front end paper (see photo). Across the way on the front inside cover he placed his small bookplate. The orange covers of the book are in pretty nice condition. There is a little bit of crinkling on the front cover and on the spine. The lettering on the spine is unworn and clear, but there is only a hint now of the gilt present at one time. The cover edges are in good shape, slightly dulled. The corners have held up well, the bottom two have a tiny bit of rubbing. The top page edge has a dozen tiny tan spots, the middle page edge has one small tan spot. The book has a slight forward lean. It is pretty decently bound, far from perfect, but I'm not finding any instances of a space or crack between any of the facing pages or between the covers and any of the facing pages. The covers are tightly bound. The title page has three speck-sized tan spots. The pages are quite clean. I didn't see much more than a half dozen or so small light spots. I did see instances of corner creasing, probably a couple dozen. There's also a little crinkling here and there. One page has a tiny tear off its outer edge, and then there are two consecutive pages in which one pulled off some of the outer edge of the paper of the next page onto itself. In this case one page has a little jaggedness/loss at its outer edge (far from the print) and the next has little bit of extra paper off its outer edge. This reoccurs in one other instance, after the main text ends and after the following Appendixes, there is a section titled Timetable Of Events In The Scottsboro Case. The last three pages of this section (which are the last three pages of the book) as well as the first of two blank rear end papers have rough edges with losses and some small tears (mostly small losses but larger on one page), though none of the losses reach the print. It's the kind of thing you see on rough-cut edges, but it's odd because these pages aren't rough-cut. Finally, there aren't any markings in the book. Theodore Bikel's dated signature is the only writing to be found in the book, and his bookplate is the only attachment. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have it in a fitted protective cover. The white (in the 1st and 4th photos) at the top edge of the front and rear is just glare off the protective cover. There is a tear at the bottom edge of the spine. There are several small tears and a small loss around the top edge of the spine. There's another tear at the juncture between the front cover and front flap, just off the bottom edge. There is some crinkling off the front top edge. The spine is toned. And finally there are some light red pen marks on the front cover, looks like some letters and numbers. The flaps are in decent enough shape, a little toning at the top edges. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'In the '30s, the Scottsboro case made history: although it was an incident which concerned negroes in America, it caused a sensation in this country-- pamphlets and articles were written, protests organized, etc. etc. With the passing of time the agitation died away: but the negroes who had been wrongfully condemned still lived-- in prison. Now the strongest and most articulate of them has written a brilliant, poignant and intensely exciting account of this terrible episode. His book is a remarkable one-- unique, we imagine, in prison literature. If Dreyfus had written his own story it could scarcely have been more impressive.'.
