Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. x, [1], 272. Illustrated with a generous section of black-and-white photography. Endpaper maps. Bound in teal cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. In the color illustrated dust jacket, price-clipped. Withal, a handsome, presentable copy. The story of the founding of the University of Alaska, of which Patty served as president for 40 years. He arrived Fairbanks as a mining professor for the first graduating class (1922) of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, a class that consisted of five coeds. His administrative abilities were soon recognized; his position as university president established the institution as today's flagship campus of the University of Alaska System.This copy warmly inscribed to Hugh Brady, who was born in Sitka and was the son of the Governor of the then District of Alaska, John Green Brady (1897-1906). Brady was founder and chairman of the Brady Lumber Company and Brady International Lumber, Inc. in Seattle. A graduate of Yale, he was awarded the Yale Medal in 1952. Inscription reads, "For our good friends Mary + Hugh Brady - with warmest regards from Virginia + Ernest / Hugh - You knew Alaska long before I did [signed] Ernest". In addition, the author has signed his name in full below the title, dated "July 1969". A pleasant association of two figures deeply entwined in Alaska history, presented here in a bright, fresh copy. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
