Octavo, black marbled boards (hardcover), silver letters, 207 pp. Fine in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: In 1825 President John Quincy Adams approved a measure to build a navy yard in the Territory of Flroida at Pensacola, then a frontier town isolated from the established eastern seaboard. However, after the virtual suppression of the slave trade and of piracy in the Gulf of Mexico during the 1820s, Pensacola lost its strategic significance and the navy yard grew very slowly. At the outbreak of war with Mexico in 1846, the yard was able to provide only limited service to the fleet operating in the Gulf of Mexico. By 1861, on the eve of the Civil War, it had become a first-class navy yard. Confederate forces used and then evacuated the yard, destroying its facilities as they retreated. Political patronage enabled the yard to survive. But its relative isolation from the industrial centers of the nation, the decline of its strategic significance with the acquisition of the naval base at Guantanamo, Cuba, and meager appropriations from Congress delayed its restitution to first-class status. In 1911, the Navy Department had decided that expenses connected with the yard were greater than its productivity justified and put the yard in caretaker status. But in 1914 it reopened as the nation's first aeronautic station. By the end of the 1920s, the Pensacola Naval Air Station, referred to as the "cradle of naval aviation" in its early years, had become the "Annapolis of the air." Its contribution to the development of naval aviation ranks second to none.
