Some years later, a handful of vacationing city dwellers were struck by the incredible natural beauty of a tract of relatively unspoiled and inaccessible forest land in the midst of the "high peaks" region of New York State's Adirondack Mountains. Boldly, they snatched the property from a threatened massive lumbering defacement and thus began, in 1887 the "Adirondack Mountain Reserve." This book is an account of the first hundred years of that enterprise, played out against the background of the vast wilderness area, the village of Keene Valley, and a surprisingly successful dedication to "fighting off the inroads of civilization." Except for replacing horse-drawn carriages with one small motor bus in the 1930s, nothing much seems to have changed environmentally in those one hundred years. The why and how of this is delightfully and intimately set forth in an extraordinary compilation f narrative, photographs and anecdotes, many previously unpublished.
