Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Printing. First printing. Spine head bumped. 2000 Trade Paperback. xix, 408 pp. In the summer of 1861, Americans were preoccupied by the question of which states would join the secession movement and which would remain loyal to the Union. This question was most fractious in the border states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. In Missouri, it was largely settled at Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861, in a contest that is rightly considered the second major battle of the Civil War. In providing the first in-depth narrative and analysis of this important but largely overlooked battle, William Piston and Richard Hatcher combine a traditional military study of the fighting at Wilson's Creek with an innovative social analysis of the soldiers who participated and the communities that supported them. In particular, they highlight the importance of the soldiers' sense of corporate honor--the desire to uphold the reputation of their hometowns--as a powerful motivator for enlistment, a source of sustenance during the campaign, and a lens through which soldiers evaluated their performance in battle.

Lee's army has not lost any of its prestige: the impact of Gettysburg on the Army of Northern Virginia and the Confederate home front by Garry W. Gallagher -- 2.) Cross purposes: Longstreet, Lee, and Confederate attack plans for July 3 at Gettysburg by William Garrett Piston -- 3.) Pickett's charge: the convergence of history and myth in the Southern past by Carol Reardon -- 4.) Armistead and Garnett: the parallel lives of two Virginia soldiers by Robert K. Krick -- 5.) Fredericksburg on the other leg: Sergeant Ben Hirst's narrative of important events, Gettysburg, July 3, 1863 by Robert L. Bee -- 6.) From Gettysburg to falling waters: Meade's pursuit of Lee by A. Wilson Greene. The six essays in this volume testify to the enduring impact of the Civil War on our national consciousness. Covering subjects as diverse as tactics, the uses of autobiography, and the power of myth-making in the southern tradition, they illustrate the rewards of imaginative scholarshipâ "even for the most intensely studied battle in America's history. . . . . . . . . . . . The Third Day at Gettysburg and Beyond brings current research and interpretation to bear on a range of pivotal issues surrounding the final day of the battle, July 3, 1863. This revisionist approach begins by expanding our knowledge of the engagement itself: individual essays address Confederate general James Longstreet's role in Pickett's Charge and Union general George Meade's failure to pursue Lee after the fighting. Other essays widen the scope of investigation to look at contemporary reactions to the Confederate defeat across the South, the construction of narratives by the participants themselvesâ "from Confederate survivors of Pickett's assault to Union sergeant Ben Hirstâ "and the reverberations of Pickett's final momentous charge. Combining fresh evidence with the reinterpretation of standard sources, these essays refocus our view of the third day at Gettysburg to take in its diverse stories of combat and memory. Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. For readers of history, and scholars alike here is a fascinating book (which received sterling reviews) that sheds light on events and personages of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. This is a trade paperback edition, issued in 1997, of "Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant - James Longstreet and His Place in Southern History" by William Garrett Piston. ************************************** Quoting from the cover write-up : "Reconstructing the military career of one of the confederacy's most competent, but also one of its most vilified corps commanders, "Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant" reveals how James Longstreet became, in the years after Appomattox, the Judas of the Lost Cause, the scapegoat for Lee and the South's defeat. ************************************* "Longstreet's image as an incompetent who lost the Battle of Gettysburg and, by extension, the war itself, is undeserved, argues William Garrett Piston. The author traces Longstreet's fall from grace, showing that his upbringing (which denied him the cavalier status accorded to Lee, Stuart, and Jackson), his postwar political affiliations, and his personality, left him open to the suspicions and criticisms of a South anxious to find a rationale for its defeat." ************************************* TITLE : Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant - James Longstreet and His Place in Southern History / AUTHOR : William Garrett Piston / IMPRINT : University of Georgia Press -(Brown Thrasher Books) / PLACE : Athens, Georgia / DATE : 1997 / EDITION : 8th Printing / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback; Contains a Preface, Notes, Bibliography, and Index.
