The author, Andreas Demetrius, was a Protestant minister at Antwerp as early as 1568. After the fall of the city, in 1585, he first went to Frankfurt, and from 1594 he was minister of the Reformed Church at Dordrecht, where he was highly respected for his religious moderation and his humanist contribution to education.
