Dos avec des usures marquées, manque sur la coiffe supérieure du vol. 1. Claude Servais Mathias Marie Roland Pouillet (1790 - 1868) physicien français. En 1825, il invente la boussole des tangentes pour pouvoir mesurer des courants puissant. Entre 1837 et 1838, il réalise grâce à l'invention du pyrhéliomètre les premières mesures quantitatives de la chaleur émise par le soleil. Ses principaux travaux portent sur la compressibilité des gaz et surtout sur les lois expérimentales relatives à l'intensité du courant électrique dans un circuit fermé. Il a su également préciser la notion de résistance électrique et montrer que les générateurs sont composés d'une force électromotrice pure et d'une résistance intérieure. On lui doit la loi de Pouillet, déduite de manière expérimentale.

With numerous engravings in the text. 4 volumes in contemporary half calf, spines worn, every volume lacks half-title. Plates with some foxing. Book-plates. "Müller's most significant textbook, the "Lehrbuch", first appeared as "Pouillet's Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie", a "free adaption" of the 1837 edition of C.S. Pouillet's"Élements de physique expérimentale et de météorologie". Müller's innovations included numerous woodcuts inserted directly into the text, whereas Pouillet had inserted copper-plate engravings after the text. The illustrations of the apparatus were particulary useful for the mechanician. /./ Each of the seven editions that were published during his lifetime underwent considerable emendation." DSB IX, p. 566.
