Qualche riferimento potrà sembrare datato ma questo libro è il documento di un'epoca e conserva, piaccia o no, quei difetti che si trovano anche nei classici. Il colpo di fioretto a Brigitte Bardot, per esempio, il cui culto è considerato da Poulet l'ultima conseguenza della Rivoluzione Francese, oggi potrebbe essere decisamente più forte con altri e infimi esempi, anche perché la celebre attrice ha acquisito negli ultimi decenni una dignità esistenziale e artistica che nel 1967 era difficile se non impossibile prevedere. Forse allora l'autore di questo libello la prese di mira per la popolarità che aveva raggiunto, forse perché era stata intervistata da Simone de Beauvoir (in un tempo in cui Alberto Moravia firmava un'analoga operetta con Claudia Cardinale), difficile dirlo con certezza. Ma questo è un esempio tra i tanti. Fatte le debite proporzioni, ci si accorge che non è il singolo caso che tiene in piedi l'ideologia di Poulet, ma una visione delle cose completamente opposta a quella attuale. Il valore del libro è da cercarsi nella palestra di idee (sbagliate per il nostro tempo) che l'autore riesce ad attivare in ogni capitolo. Ci sono letture che sviluppano l'elasticità mentale, magari facendoci ragionare su cose che rifiutiamo per istinto. Poulet ne raccoglie in gran quantità. (Armando Torno) Traduzione di Luigi Emery.
