Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Book club edition. Jacket edges rubbed, front jacket flap price-clipped. Top page ridge lightly foxed. 1984 Hard Cover. 276 pp. A WWII veteran combines firsthand immediacy with perceptive analysis in this vividly detailed history of the Battle of Arnhem. The Allied effort the liberate the Netherlands faced a brutal setback at the Battle of Arnham, where the men of the 1st British Airborne Division showed unsurpassed valor in the face of overwhelming opposition. The dramatic defeat, immortalized in the famous film A Bridge Too Far, is recounted here by Major Geoffrey Powell, who commanded C Company of the 156th Battalion, and who valorously led the entire battalion through?and out of?the onslaught. In The Devil?s Birthday, Powell draws on his own experience of the fighting while offring a deeply researched assessment of the operation and its execution. Casualties during the battle were appalling. The brave and enduring Dutch people suffered catastrophically while German morale was strengthened at a time of otherwise ebbing fortunes. But the hard lessons of Arnham will not be forgotten.

Digest. Condition: Good+. Powell, Turner, and Ernst (illustrator). First Edition, 1st Printing. A nice copy of the Winter 1950 issue of the British science fiction magazine Science-Fantasy. This issue was the the second and last publication under the editorship of Walter Gillings. Science-Fantasy was published during the 1950s to accompany New Worlds magazine. In the late 1940s, Gillings had produced three volumes of his first science fiction venture "Fantasy" before it failed. As a result, he was left with a substantial amount of stories purchased with the intention of publication. In 1950, Nova brought on Gillings as its editor of their new magazine, Science-Fantasy. With him came the inventory of stories from "Fantasy." After only two issues (Summer and Winter 1950) Gillings was replaced by New Worlds editor John Carnell. This copy is in remarkable condition for its age and scarcity. Cover's have some light wear and the staples have corroded over time leaving its stain on the inner margins. A soft vertical crease permeates most of the 96 numbered pages paginated [i: inner cover advertisements], [1], 2-96, [97: inner back cover advertisement for the Fantasy Book Centre]. Binding is solid with no loose pages. Pages are clean and unmarked. A good+ copy that beats many seen recently come to market.
