Born in 1876 at the White House during the presidency of her grandfather Ullyses S. Grant, Julia Dent Grant married Prince Mikhail Catnuzene, a Russian general and diplomat, in 1899, and lived in St. Petersburg, Russia during the Russo-Japanese War, the 1905 Revolution, World War One, and the early days of the Soviet Revolution of 1917, before she and her family fled through Finland to the United States. These events and more are described in this historical memoir. The material published here was originally published as "Revolutionary Days; Recollections of Romanoffs and Bolsheviki, 1914 1917," (Scribners, 1920); and "My Life Here and There." (Scribners, 1922).

Julia Dent Grant Cantacuzène Speransky, Princess Cantacuzène, Countess Speransky (1876 - 1975), was an American author and historian, granddaughter of President Ulysses S. Grant, and wife of Prince Mikhail Cantacuzène, a Russian general and diplomat. These memoirs recount tumultous times in Russia, including, among other things, her perspective, from the royal circles, on the Russo-Japanese War, the Revolution of 1905, World War I, the murder of Rasputin, the October Revolution, the rise of the Bolsheviks, and her flight from Russia. Eventually she returned to America, and after her divorce, she re-established her American citizenship and renounced her aristocratic titles.
